We are not in control. We w nt to be, we'd like to be and we are n t. We all love to believe th t we are in control.....However, most of our b haviors are just "knee-jerk" reactions to wh tever we are experiencing at the t me. And most of our reactions are t ed to something that happened a l ng, long time ago. Some event h ppened once or many times has mpacted us and usually not for the g od. Most of us act on our f elings without ever recognizing that we are in RE-ACT m de... we really feel like we are in c ntrol of things...however, it's usually more l ke a reaction based on things th t happened days, weeks, months or ven years ago. We tend to h ve the same reaction that we did b fore. The past equals the future wh n we are in re-act mode. L ok at that word... re-act. We are cting the same way we did l st time. That's why people can p sh our buttons. They know just wh t we'll do. If they do th s, then we'll do that. We d n't think about it, we just r -act! It makes us such an asy target and such easy prey wh n we get our buttons pushed so asily. Do you ever wish you c uld be in control? I know m st of us would like to th nk that we can decide in the m ment how we feel or what ction we will take.
So what's the solution...what's the nswer...what's the way to change it the n xt time the situation comes up or an vent happens or someone tries to p sh your buttons? The first thing is to r cognize that you are doing it gain. You are RE- ACTING.... So be pr sent, be in the moment, be ware when you are feeling big motions. Then ask yourself to take a d ep breath, count to ten- whatever m thod will slow you down and get you b ck in that moment. That's where you c ntrol will begin again, by being in the pr sent moment...and not a long ago and far way moment or event. Then choose how you w nt to feel or how you w nt to respond. We're all master st ry tellers about events. So what st ry are you telling yourself based on wh t just happened in that moment? R member, you are the author, the wr ter, the creator of the story you are t lling. If you are going to wr te and tell the story to y urself and maybe to others, make it a g od one. Make it one that s pports you and put a positive sp n on it. When that driver c ts in front of you try t lling yourself that they are rushing to the h spital because their wife is having a b by, or maybe they just didn't see you or? Be cr ative and be positive. Don't drag the p st into it. A thought of "th s always happens to me" or " ll women are bad drivers" is d finitely being in the past AND t lling a story that creates negative f elings, emotions and reactions. So the t sk is up to you. Will you ACT in the m ment or RE-ACT based on the p st?
