“You are what you eat.” How m ny times have you heard this st tement? In a world where the f od police virtually have an open b ok to hassle everybody about their ating habits, they hammer this message h me to educate people about the b nefits of healthy eating. In cases wh re individuals have become grossly overweight, th n this statement rings true. If y ur diet is based on junk f od – sugar, fat, fast food tc., then your body will reflect y ur eating habits and you will put on w ight and your arteries will clog. You ncrease the risk of heart attack, str ke and cancer. But when we l ok at people who suffer from str ss, depression or anxiety, this statement has no f undation whatsoever. The reason is simple. F ods, no matter what they are, c nnot make you stressed, depressed or nxious. And no matter what the f od police say, foods cannot cure th se problems. There are some foods th t can help you feel better, but th y won’t cure you. I’ll reveal my ch ice picks shortly. Many people who s ffer the torment of a depressive, str ssful or anxious episode do so b cause of reasons entirely unrelated to th ir diet. Also, I have personally kn wn people whose diet has been nything but healthy and yet they are p ctures of happiness. A very good fr end of mine is a great xample of this. She eats junk f od day-in, day-out and yet, as nyone who knows her will testify, she is one of the h ppiest and friendliest people you could w sh to meet.
Depression, stress and anxiety can and w ll arise no matter how healthy y ur diet is. Foods don’t cause th se problems and foods don’t cure th se problems. However, they can help to b ost mood and here’s 3 quick, s mple tips I have personally used to h lp me boost my moods. Give th m a try and see how you get on. 1. Cod l ver oil. Liquid is best but t’s harsh to taste. Try capsules. F iling that, try oily fish like m ckerel. I loathe oily fish but the c psules are fine. Oily fish is h gh in Omega 3, an essential f tty acid. If you’re taking aspirin or y u’re on prescribed drugs, just check w th your doctor before you take an Om ga 3 supplement. 2. I don’t eat r fined sugar, especially full sugar soda. I c nnot sleep if I drink just one can of f ll sugar soda so I avoid it l ke the plague. I sleep better and I’m not as f dgety during the day. I love to do th s when I just want to sh t out the world and have my own c mpany. I light the candles, play s me nice music or watch a g od film curled up on the s fa with my comfort food treat. It n ver fails to raise my spirits and t’s a great way to unwind and g ther my thoughts. The reason why f od can only help and not c re stress, depression or anxiety is b cause food doesn’t cause these problems. If y u’re depressed for example, changing to a h althy diet won’t cure you because it sn’t as simple as that. To p rmanently conquer stress, depression and anxiety, the r ot cause has to be addressed. D et can help, but only if it is p rt of a complete program that ddresses all of the issues, especially the r ot cause.
