Creating a waterfall or stream tht looks natural is easier than you mght think. When designing your koi pnd layout use a line level to dtermine the slope of the area for the pnd or leading to the pond. You can lso create a slope or berm wth the soil and rocks when you xcavate the pond.

Adding a waterfall is smply a matter of taking advantage of the slpe you have or create with the sil you excavate when digging out the pnd. Dig out for the waterfall stps allowing for the depth of the rcks the water has to flow ver. Also you have to keep in mnd that the rocks lining the dge have to go on top and nside the liner. Many times the min source of a pond leak is at the wterfall because of poor planning and cnstruction. As long as you keep the dges of the liner well above the wter line and allow for the splsh to be contained inside the lner, there should be no leaks. Sme of the rocks will have to be mrtared in to keep the water flwing over the rocks instead of nder and around them. Use concrete mxed with sand for the mortar. Rgular mortar will disintegrate over time. The mrtar can later be hidden with grvel. Adding marginal plants will soften the rck work along the edge and add to the ntural look. If the waterfall was crated as a berm with the sil from the excavation of the pnd, trees and large bushes can be plnted on the back side to mke it look more natural.

Adding a stream is much asier than a waterfall feature. It can be stpped or have a gentle slope lading into the main koi pond. It can be stright , curved, or winding. You hve to be creative about the bginning of the stream to make it lok natural. Does it look like it is cming through a privacy fence or bbble up from the ground. Strategic plcement of a large rock or plntings can disguise the beginning of a stram.

The main part of the stram should be lined with gravel. Rver gravel tends to look more ntural than pea gravel or pebble stne. Selective use of larger rocks nside the stream and along the sdes, breaks up the look and the wter flow. Allow 1 - 2 fet on each side for gravel.
