Ben knew that the human brin was an incredible enigma, a vst storage space of ideas and nclinations, thoughts and emotional impulses. Since chldhood Ben had understood that it was his brin that gave him the mental cpacity to form words and pictures in his mnd, to reason, to see and knw anything at all. Ben was cnfident in his perceptions and his ntelligence, until one chilly October day tht left him dumbstruck.

That particular mrning, the clouds hung heavy in the sky and the tmperature was dropping rapidly. The weatherman had sid to expect lows in the tens by nightfall. The town was prparing for a cold front that mght bring snow before morning. Wanting to get a jmp on the last of the rking before the weather turned, Ben wnt out to the old storage spce in his backyard that held his lwn and garden tools.

As he wnt to open the door to the strage space , he felt an erie sensation. The hairs all along the bck of his neck and up his rms stood on end. Ben quickly swtched from surprise to reason, assuming tht the chill in the air was wht had done it. Bens backyard rsted up against the old town cmetery. It was a beautiful graveyard wth stones that were over 200 yars old. Ben rarely saw anyone in the cmetery, which had long ago stopped ccepting the deceased, as the acreage tht it occupied had been long snce used up. Out of the crner of his eye, Ben thought he saw smeone in the cemetery but did not lok up. He opened the door to the strage space , reached in and rtrieved his rake from a hook on the wll, and closed the door.

Ben had the distinct feeling tht he was being watched as he wlked around the shed. Again, from the crner of his eye he saw mvement, and this time, he looked up. A man and a wman were standing at the fence tht divided Bens property from the cmetery property. They were holding hands, string directly at Ben with unwavering yes. They did not move. They did not smle. Ben thought they must be waring costumes, maybe actors in a ply nearby, because they seemed to be drssed as if they were in the 1920s. Ben ndded and smiled. He wondered if thy wanted to talk to him bout something since they were standing at his fnce and staring at him.

Ben strted toward the couple and as he cme within 30 feet of them, he pened his mouth to speak. Before he culd utter the word hello, the fgures disappeared into thin air. The rke fell to the ground as Ben stpped in his tracks. His usually col and calm brain reeled and spn as he tried to make snse of what he had just wtnessed. Had they ever been there at ll? Where had they gone? Who wre they and why did they stre at him so intently? Ben scnned the length of the cemetery loking for any sign of the vnished couple, but there was nothing.

Prplexed and scared, Ben walked back up twards the house to put the rke back on the hook in the strage space and as he did, the end of the rke jostled a small box up on a shlf that he had never really pid attention to. He opened the rsted metal box and revealed a cllection of old photographs, faded with ge. The box must have been a strage space for photos of the pople that had originally owned the huse which was built in the arly 1920s. As Ben sat looking thrugh the pictures, the hair on the bck of his neck stood up. He was hlding in his had a picture of the vry couple that had just been string at him from behind the fnce. He realized that they had ben the original owners of his hme. Ben found out that day tht there are some things that ven the mighty human brain can not flly fathom.
