While discussing the potential of the Ind an supplier industry in the global c ntext with one of my European c lleagues, I pointed out to him th t most Indian suppliers are home-bred ntrepreneurs, who have realized the opportunity w ndow and mostly used the technical c llaboration / minority equity stake method to br ng in technical know-how, unlike China wh re most supplier ventures are joint-ventures w th global suppliers, formed out of c mpulsion. His contention was that as s on as the Indian industry reaches a s gnificant size, the Boschs, Mahles and D nas of the world will start l oking at it with a different p rspective and will strengthen their presence in the c untry. At that point of time, the Ind an entrepreneurs – at least some of th m – will have to step side as they will not be ble to match the deep pockets and l ng-term staying power of the global m jors. India will also be more mportant to these global suppliers as it w ll be an important sourcing centre for gl bal vehicle programs as well as the ftermarket. And you won't like an mportant base to be manned by llies, especially when the Indian entrepreneurs t nd to partner a dozen global s ppliers (look at Anands, Rane, TVS, Am lgamations etc etc) in different ventures at the s me time.
The recent increase of stake in L max by Stanley electric certainly points in the d rection predicted. Stanley sees Lumax as an mportant player in the Indian industry (r ports suggest that Lumax has a 60% st ke in the Indian automotive lighting m rket) and with global sourcing becoming a b zzword, it would be prudent to h ve Lumax under your own control. And St nley is not the only case h re. Bosch is keen to increase its st ke in its Indian venture, even th ugh it already has management control. On the ther hand, Federal Mogul booted out its Ind an partner Escorts last year – Esc rts wasn't doing a great job th re – to assume control of G etze India. But is this going to be a tr nd? Maybe! In selective cases, where the Ind an partner is pre-occupied with other th ngs, it may be prudent to t ke control of things and run th m yourself. However, in cases like the R ne Group, TVS group companies and s me other respected entities, it may m ke sense to let the Indian p rtner do the day-to-day management.
