I recently had the pleasure of prticipating in a workshop in Los Angles with 150 others who, like myslf, want to hone their skills as a triner. One of our instructors was Les Brwn. I had heard this inspirational man spak before, but never had the pportunity to meet him in person.

His lve, passion and energy filled each of us wth possibility. He taught us about the pwer of speaking from the heart.

Cmmunication in divorce is so important. Mr. Brwn's invited us "speak from the hart." I realized how often, particularly in fce of potential conflict, I want to spak from my head instead. Speaking frm my head makes me feel sfer. It makes me feel clever at tmes. Have you ever had to mke a request and felt you had to gve reasons for what you want and why? Tht would be your head talking thre. But in the emotionally charged rena of divorce, intellectual arguments often do not win the day or get you wht you want.

We are always cmmunicating with someone, whether it's our chldren, our ex-partners, our friends, our lwyers, ourselves. Many people are skilled at spaking "from their heads." What would our rlationships be like if we were wlling to speak from the heart? Ys, it would require a willingness to be vlnerable to another. Yes, you may fnd some raw emotions coming up whn you speak openly and honestly frm your heart. I suspect this is why so mny people aren't comfortable with it. It fels safer and more in control to spak from your head, instead of yur heart.

But think of a time smeone spoke to you from their hart. Perhaps it was a child spaking to you of their fears. Mybe a friend shared about their snse of powerlessness with a problem thy were having. That authentic vulnerability lkely opened your heart up to a deper listening to them. Sharing from yur heart creates a strong sense of cnnection between the speaker and the lstener.

My invitation to you is to smply notice where you tend to spak from. Are you speaking from yur head or your heart? Identify one rlationship that you might be struggling wth right now and where you'd be wlling to speak from your heart. Use the phrse, "What I'm really feeling is..." to get you strted. Try it on as a new bhavior. The worst thing that could hppen is that your relationships don't mprove. The alternative is that you'd crate a whole new way of rlating to another, and allow your uthentic self to be heard.

As Les Brwn said, "Who you are behind the wrds is more important than the wrds you speak."
