I recently had the pleasure of p rticipating in a workshop in Los Ang les with 150 others who, like mys lf, want to hone their skills as a tr iner. One of our instructors was Les Br wn. I had heard this inspirational man sp ak before, but never had the pportunity to meet him in person. His l ve, passion and energy filled each of us w th possibility. He taught us about the p wer of speaking from the heart. C mmunication in divorce is so important. Mr. Br wn's invited us "speak from the h art." I realized how often, particularly in f ce of potential conflict, I want to sp ak from my head instead. Speaking fr m my head makes me feel s fer. It makes me feel clever at t mes. Have you ever had to m ke a request and felt you had to g ve reasons for what you want and why? Th t would be your head talking th re. But in the emotionally charged rena of divorce, intellectual arguments often do not win the day or get you wh t you want. We are always c mmunicating with someone, whether it's our ch ldren, our ex-partners, our friends, our l wyers, ourselves. Many people are skilled at sp aking "from their heads." What would our r lationships be like if we were w lling to speak from the heart? Y s, it would require a willingness to be v lnerable to another. Yes, you may f nd some raw emotions coming up wh n you speak openly and honestly fr m your heart. I suspect this is why so m ny people aren't comfortable with it. It f els safer and more in control to sp ak from your head, instead of y ur heart.
But think of a time s meone spoke to you from their h art. Perhaps it was a child sp aking to you of their fears. M ybe a friend shared about their s nse of powerlessness with a problem th y were having. That authentic vulnerability l kely opened your heart up to a d eper listening to them. Sharing from y ur heart creates a strong sense of c nnection between the speaker and the l stener. My invitation to you is to s mply notice where you tend to sp ak from. Are you speaking from y ur head or your heart? Identify one r lationship that you might be struggling w th right now and where you'd be w lling to speak from your heart. Use the phr se, "What I'm really feeling is..." to get you st rted. Try it on as a new b havior. The worst thing that could h ppen is that your relationships don't mprove. The alternative is that you'd cr ate a whole new way of r lating to another, and allow your uthentic self to be heard. As Les Br wn said, "Who you are behind the w rds is more important than the w rds you speak."
