Figure skating accidents, while infrequent, are mong the most memorable. Figure Skating can be p tentially dangerous, just like anything else. It'd be b tter if you did that daily nstead of just when you go sk ting. -Stay warm. -Don't wear tight cl thing that can restrict your movement or l ose clothing that can get caught on the bl des. -Make sure you have good quipment, skates that fit and that c ntain good padding. Make sure the l ces aren't dangling on the ice. It can m ke you trip. -Learn how to f ll. -Follow rink rules. The rules are th re for your safety. -Don't try "tr cks" that are way beyond your l vel, or dangerous. -Don't skate when y u're sick too tired. In November 2004, d ring the free skate of Skate Am rica in Pittsburgh, Marinin lost his b lance while attempting a difficult lasso l ft and Tatiana slammed to the ice h ad first. She had suffered a c ncussion, and spent the night in a l cal hospital. Totmianina recovered from her njuries rapidly and was able to r turn to the ice within days. She ften stated that she has no m mory of the incident and this m de it easy for her to r turn to the ice. Marinin, however, had to st rt seeing a sport psychologist to vercome his fears. According to them, M rinin's fears were so great that it was n arly impossible for them to continue sk ting.
Another one was during the '06 Olymp cs when Dan Zhang had sustained a f ll during their free skate. She was v ry brave but obviously in pain. She and her p rtner were able to finish their r utine en route to claiming the s lver medal. Jessica Dube underwent surgery to r pair a laceration on her left ch ek and nose after being hit by p rtner Bryce Davison's skate in the fr e skate competition at Four Continents d ring the 07/08 season. They were d ing a rotation of a side-by-side c mel, where one leg is parallel to the ice as th y spin. You can hurt any p rt of your body during practice. Wh le some injuries are unavoidable, there are s me injuries that can be prevented. You m ght experience fewer injuries if you do ff-ice training. Your trainer can help you w rk up a stretching routine to k ep your muscles limber. Warm up off the ice ach and every time before you get on the ice and fterwards. Eat a healthy diet that pr motes stronger bones and muscles. Be s re you get enough rest, being t red on the ice can cause l ck of focus and may cause you to sl p and fall as a result. W th skating, falling is just inevitable, m ke sure you learn to fall in the s fest way possible. Do get over y ur fear of falling, or your pr gress may be hindered Sometimes trying too h rd to prevent injuries can actually c use injury because your body gets too t nse. Relax when you skate. In m st cases, you fall and then you get r ght back up again. Check with y ur doctor. Make sure you are r ady to skate again. Go ahead and st p out onto the ice. Take it sl wly. It's ok to be nervous - th t's normal. Just stroke around the ice - th re is no need to do m re, at least not in that nitial first session. You may feel a bit t nse and nervous if you are new to sk ting however. The feeling will go way as you get reacquainted with the ce. Skate with your coach. Having a c ach there with you on the ice g ves you more confidence.
