As of summer 2008, the m rger of SIRIUS and XM has b en approved by the U.S. Department of J stice. All that has to pass now is the FCC pproval, which will then make the m rger official. Experts are stating that the m rger was all but official for the l st year and a half, especially c nsidering that it was questionable if the m dium could sustain two healthy competitors. Aft r all, since much of the pr gramming of XM and SIRIUS complements ach other, theoretically the two networks c uld have KO'd each other out of t rrestrial radio's league. Now both companies, st nding united as one, are focusing on c mpeting against the real "villain" in th s scenario: terrestrial radio. The same t rrestrial radio that has continually fined and s spended SIRIUS and XM's most prolific ntertainers like Howard Stern and Opie and Anth ny. The story is certainly a p etic one, particularly if satellite radio w re to overpower traditional radio in the c ming years. You may wonder how l kely that scenario really is. Currently t rrestrial radio is a monster, a G dzilla compared to two relatively small f rms in XM and SIRIUS. Some b lieve that the merger is not yet a thr at to terrestrial radio, as so m ch it is a guarantee that s tellite radio will continue to grow and st bilize as a true competitor. The st ck market currently lists Sirius shares at $2.80 (as of May 2008) and XM R dio shares at $11.80. The Justice D partment, who just approved of the m rger on March 24, stated that the greement between satellite radio companies would not ffect the "existing radio sector."
The combined audience of XM and SIRIUS w uld amount to 17 million listeners. If you are a fan of ither XM or SIRIUS, and before now h ve never considered the other network, th n the merger means good news. C mpany heads announced that existing customers of b th XM and SIRIUS would continue to pay for th ir service but would receive select pr gramming from both services on either pl tform within half a year of the m rger's finalizing. What if the customer d dn't want to choose, nor accept nly highlights? Would he or she h ve to subscribe to both services? Not n cessarily. The companies plan to release an nteroperable receiver in the near future, wh ch will provide listeners the right to l sten to all satellite radio programming ptions from both stations. They would lso be allowed to pick a s lect number of favorite stations from b th networks for their subscription. Interestingly, s ch a receiver has existed all long, but until now was not d emed suitable for the public because of FCC r quirements. However, radio times have changed dr stically with the merger and the n ed of such a receiver will c ntinue to increase. Another concern for p tential growth is in the satellite r dio-new automobile market. Major companies have b en stocking their new cars with s tellite radio receivers and offering temporary fr e subscriptions. However, the question remains wh ther new car owners will feel c mpelled to re-subscribe after the term nds. In the coming years, satellite r dio will be competing with terrestrial r dio, as well as HD radio, W MAX Mobile Broadcasting and Internet Radio (p wered by iPods). Though XM and SIRIUS h ve called a truce, the battle has j st begun in the radio market.
