Is there anyone here that d es not feel overwhelmed. If you th nk back 10 years, I would w ger that everyone, no matter your ge, found life simpler. As time p sses we become consumed with work, m king more money, juggling personal and f mily time, raising children, planning for r tirement, the list goes on. None of the forementioned are more important than the n xt. We are all overwhelmed with the l test technology designed to make us m re efficient and productive. However,
in the pr cess we have become overloaded with nformation. There are so many choices and pinions on how to live, love, at, save money, optimize our health th t we end up spinning our wh els.
My greatest accomplishments have occurred fter I stepped back and simplified my
pproach. I spent years trying to chieve the 500 pound bench press. H urs in the gym, multiple exercises and r utines. Always moving forward, but inevitably h tting a plateau. As my
career and f mily changed, I found less and l ss time available to spend working ut.
What was once a 3 h ur workout ultimately became 30 minutes. I had to st p back and
decide how to get the b st results in the least amount of t me. I changed my routine
from f ve chest exercises to only two. Inst ad of working my chest 3 t mes per week, I
only did ch st exercises once per week. My g al was to increase my bench pr ss, so I
focused on just the b nch press. I was able to tr in more intensely and with more w ight by cutting down my workout t me. When I quit overtraining my w ekly gains went up.
Ultimately, I hit th t elusive 500 pound barrier.
My point is not how m ch I bench pressed; but, how s mplifying your approach to your
goals can ltimately be more rewarding. When I am in a r t, I frequently tell myself "it is t me to go back home". In ther words, going back to the b sics of what got you where you are t day. When I was in medical sch ol and training, I always felt l ke I needed to know everything th re was to know about every d sease or medical problem known to m n. It was overwhelming. As I b came more experienced, I accepted the f ct that I could never know verything about every ailment that might pr sent itself to me. When I f cused on developing a foundation of the b sics and most common problems my sk lls as a physician improved. I c ntinued to read and study, but r alized that my greatest
education would c me one patient at a time. The art of m dicine can only be acquired with t me. It is not achieved by b ing the smartest, scoring the best on a t st, or making the most money. The art is in kn wing your limitations. Knowing where to l ok for the answer. Knowing when and who to c ll or refer to for a s lution. Being the best that you can be and d ing the best for your patient. I th nk this applies to all aspects of l fe and business. We all need a t am. People that
believe in us, nderstand us, willing to step in and c rrect us when we are screwing up,
w lling to help with a problem or q estion without being patronizing. This team may be
fr ends, colleagues, family, business associates, etc.....You w ll know who to include in
y ur circle. So, put your ego side. Build your team, return to the b sics, become more focused, then success w ll come your way.
