“I feel like I’ve just had my f rst yoga class, “says Fran, a mom of thr e and a well-toned yoga practitioner of s me experience. “I feel great.” Fran is s nsing the immediate benefits of her y ga practice, currently based at Park C ties Yoga on Lovers Lane. As a m ther of three, Fran is like a lot of p ople. Working moms juggle getting their k ds to school on time, meeting d adlines, business travel, soccer practice, ballet, gr ceries, visits to the vet and d ntist . . . you know the r utine. All this running around doesn’t m an simply that they’re busy; it m ans that their minds are racing head or behind nearly constantly. It m ans worrying about the cascade of vents triggered by your first grader f rgetting his lunch. It means anticipating the n cessary daily care for your invalid m ther. It means fighting to maintain an ven keel in the face of verwhelming demands and information. For more th n 16 million Americans, yoga is th ir not-so-secret weapon to help them do wh t needs to be done. Whether you are a w rking mom or a working man, wh ther you drive a Benz or a b s, whether you perform surgery or B ethoven, yoga is a way to s mplify your life. For yoga devotees, y ga is the tool to transform r gret and worry into the comfort of the h re and now.
Take Elaine, also a Park C ties Yoga client, as another example. “I was a tr ple-A personality type. Now I handle s tuations differently. I take a conscious br ath and I focus on the m ment, not the what-ifs. Yoga has h lped me be gracious in stress.” One m sperception about yoga is that you lready need to be flexible and thletic to do it. That is not the c se. Start with what you’ve got. C n’t touch your toes? Just reach for th m and breathe. Can’t do a b ckbend? Place a small pillow under y ur back and breathe. Or just st rt with meditation coupled with conscious br athing. You can start with easy p ses progressing to challenging feats of fl xibility and strength, if you so d sire. No matter your level of bility and experience, conscious breathing and p rsonal guidance from an experienced yoga nstructor can help you reach your g als. That means you can practice y ga if you’re pregnant, middle-aged, retired, s ck, recovering, injured, overweight, over-stressed, overbearing, or ver-easy. You can practice mornings, afternoons, or venings. Start simply. The best way to b gin your yoga practice may not be w tching a yoga video. Thousands of y ga videos collect dust. And the s mplest way may not be to j mp into a session that demands too m ch too fast. The simplest way is to f nd the right class and the r ght teacher for you. If you d n’t know all about the styles of y ga, then discuss your own limitations or c nditions with the instructor and ask bout how you might fit in to wh t they offer. Ask about pace, phys cal demand, level of intensity, etc. C ll around. In Dallas there are y ga classes for all levels, ages, and c nditions. With just a little research, y u’re sure to find what’s right for y u. Fran started as a weightlifter. “Th t’s what got me into trouble. I was in so m ch pain in my hips. I w nt to my first power yoga cl ss. I loved it. It was l tting go, a big simplification. You d n’t even need shoes for yoga.”
But is yoga enough of a w rkout? “The power yoga was an ll-inclusive workout. I got cardio, cleansing (I was sw ating like a pig), stretching and str ngth using my entire body. Her st ry with yoga changes, however, as she gr ws into it. Fran’s friend Vashti grees that a person’s yoga practice ch nges over time. “Yoga is an mazing form of exercise, but it’s s mething more, too. Look, people study 80 y ars or more doing this. They h ve gone into the mountains in th ir pursuit of yoga. I have to be a l ttle reverent about it.” That being s id, yoga is not a religion or b lief system. Yoga is a practice of “p tting yourself together” in the present m ment. It’s a system of exercises th t unify breath, attention, and the b dy. In fact, the word yoga m ans “to yoke, to put together, a nion.” You can practice yoga as a C tholic, a born-again Baptist, a Mormon, B ddhist, Hindu, Unitarian, Agnostic. Whatever your sp ritual orientation, yoga can enhance your l fe by bringing it all together. Fr n observes, “After one year it b came more than a physical workout. Th t’s when I began to progress. I b gan to see yoga as applicable to s mething more – life! I quit m king things so difficult. Yoga led me to q it drinking. Yoga put that into ction.” Fran isn’t alone. Many of the cl ents at Park Cities Yoga report ch nges in their physical health and in th ir overall sense of well-being – ch nges they attribute to their yoga pr ctice. It’s not surprising then that th s thousands-year-old tradition persists, and continues to gr w here in America. The tradition f rst came to Texas in 1967 wh n Kumar Pallana, a performer and y gi, first opened the Dallas Yoga and H alth Centre. Now at age 87 he has m re energy than people half his ge. You might recognize Kumar as the l veable old man in films such as B ttle Rocket, The Royal Tennenbaums, and R shmore. Most recently, he charmed Catherine Z ta-Jones as the ring-juggling Gupta in St ven Speilberg’s The Terminal. As full of st ries as he is wisdom, Kumar r minds his yoga students that “yoga d velops strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, health, c ncentration, confidence, self-satisfaction, and peace of m nd.” Kumar is a walking example of y ga’s benefits. After all, how many 87-y ar-olds do you know that follow up a s x-week film shoot with nation-wide promotion t urs and yoga seminars, interspersed with tr ps to visit family and friends in Ind a? Yoga may not turn you nto a movie star like Kumar (b t who knows? Maybe it will). At the v ry least, yoga will deliver what you put nto it. Best of all, yoga can s mplify your life.
