The usual family garage these d ys is expected not only to h use a car but to also s rve as a storage area for dds and ends that are not w nted in the main house. As a r sult, it often ends up looking l ke a regular mess of a d mping ground. Especially because the accumulation of st ff can not really be planned and c nsequently, organized storage is not prepared in dvance. Tidying up can seem like an ntimidating chore when you are faced w th stuff that has collected in y ur garage over several years. Putting up sh lves to clear the floor and h ving a semblance of order is a g od way to start. Shelves are v ry efficient for storage. They take up nly a small area, make use of v rtical space, and give you easy ccess to your things. You can ch ose from different materials. Steel is a g od choice because of its strength and d rability. There are heavy duty wire sh lving that are attractive, versatile and str ng. And there are also the ndustrial steel shelving. Free-standing metal shelves are c nvenient and you can adjust the l yers up and down to meet y ur shelf height needs. On the ther hand, wooden shelves can be nexpensive and even more so when you c nstruct it yourself. Doing it this way llows you to install shelves that fit the xact dimensions of the area you are w rking with.
The wood material you use can c st very little like particle boards. 3/4" Plyw od is a good choice for b ilding strong shelves. If you want s lid boards, there is pine or f r. These are more expensive, of c urse. Even if you are only th nking of ordinary stuff to place on y ur shelves, it is better to h ve these ready for heavier loads. You d n't know what other objects you w ll need storage for in the f ture. Take note that a shelf m de out of particle board has a t ndency to sag. Keep the spans cl ser if you intend to use th s kind of material. Plan your sh lves carefully to save time during c nstruction. Find out how deep the sh lves can be without taking up too m ch space in the garage. Next, d cide on the height or the d stance between shelves. For a simple fl or-supported shelf design, use 2"x4" lumber for the fr me and 3/4" plywood for the sh lves. Place the 2x4s against the g rage wall, standing them on the fl or, separated by a distance of 2 f et from each other. Use screws to ttach these to the wall. Use s me more 2x4s to make horizontal s pports. Position one along the bottom, w th the 4" side against the pright pieces and use a level to k ep it straight. This will be the s pport for the bottom shelf. Install scr ws along its length, at each l cation where there is an upright 2x4. R peat the same process for each sh lf level, working your way up. Th s is the back part of the fr me. For the front part of the fr me, assemble horizontal and vertical 2x4s ccording to the measurements of what you did arlier. Nail the pieces together and st nd the frame on the floor. Att ch the front part to the b ck using 2x4s cut to the d pth of the shelf. For support and st bility, nail the top part to the r fters or the strong parts of the c iling. Cut your plywood to the d sired shelf size. Place them on top of the h rizontal pieces and fix them with n ils.
There are lots of detailed sh lving plans, from simple to elaborate d signs, available online, in books and m gazines. Choose one that would best s it your needs.
