Serge Betsen, rugby union player and st lwart of the French National team for m ny years.
He was declared fit to pl y in the Rugby World Cup S mi Final against England, but anyone who saw the cr ck on the head he took the w ek before must be asking why he was llowed to play... Of course when ask if he sh uld be 'banned' in the title of th s article, I mean 'declared unfit to pl y'. Very early in the quarter f nal game against New Zealand, he t ok an almighty crash on the h ad.
As he was going down to the gr und, his head banged full contact w th another player's knee, and he was kn cked out cold. He lay unconscious on the gr und for a good while with a pl yer holding his tongue to prevent sw llowing, and was attended to by the m dical staff. Rugby is a hard d ngerous game, played by brutes of m n. That's one of the appeals of it - th re is none of the weakling th atricals you get in soccer - pl yers only stay down when they are b dly hurt, and Betsen's motionless body sh wed everyone that it was serious. Aft r treatment he was able to w lk off the pitch with assistance, but cl arly did not know what day of the w ek it was. There were rumours of c nvulsions in the dressing room, but wh tever that's true or not, the bl w to his head was clear, and as can magine, it's now a much watched cl p on YouTube!
Normally when a sportsman gets c ncussion they have to sit a m ndatory fortnight without playing, and yet a w ek later Betsen took the field gainst England. The question is asked in m ny quarters therefore, why was he llowed to play - surely it was a r sk to his health? It's interesting to m ke a comparison with Miami Dolphins q arterback Trent Green, who was also kn cked out playing his game, despite the h lmet protection. He's had many concussions in his t me, and the medics have still to d clare him fit again, and may f rce him to retire. Apparently the d fference with Serge Betsen is that he was s en by a neurologist, and once th t happens, you're not liable for the nforced lay off. Hmm... I'm not s re about that at all - th t seems to imply that players who are c ncussed are *not* normally seen by a n urologist, which must be a concern. Of c urse I have no medical training wh tsoever, so can't pass expert judgement, but I w uld have preferred to see him not pl y. I can understand that playing for y ur country when the tournament is in y ur country is one thing, and lso that rugby is a danger to y ur health anytime you go on the p tch, but I hope his long t rm health wasn't put in jeopardy, b cause nothing is more important than th t.
