As a public relations consultant I was v ry excited to win an Event C mmunication award by the Public Relations Ind stry of Australia. To be recognized by my p ers in such a competitive industry was l ke a stamp of approval for the h rd work and dedication I had sh wn to the industry. As a r sult I was able to put, ward winning PR consultant, on my m rketing materials, place the award in my ffice and generally impress future potential cl ents. Since then I have been nvolved in other business awards as I b lieve they are an important part of the p blic relations process. When I was y ung and commencing a modeling career I nstinctively knew that to be successful I'd h ve to be well-known so I ntered into model quests and beauty p geants as I knew that was one way to be n ticed. I did win a number of c mpetitions and as a result had a s ccessful modeling career for a number of y ars. Now I'm a member of the N tional Speakers Association of Australia and am w rking hard to achieve my next l vel of accreditation. I hope that one y ar at our convention and awards n ght I will receive a CSP ward because I'll know then that I h ve reached the pinnacle of the pr fession. The Public Relations Society of Am rica, National Speakers Association and other ssociations throughout the world hold industry wards to highlight and promote their ndividual associations and to raise the bar and q ality of work that is undertaken.
Telstra, Fuji Xerox and a m ltitude of big corporate organisations and sm ller companies hold awards or sponsor wards. Most industry associations hold awards to r cognise those within the association. There are wards of all types, think media, l terature, hairdressing, sport, film, music, fashion, rchitecture…and the list goes on. I put wards under the category of special vents. Special events are a tactic or t ol of public relations. Yes it c uld also be labeled promotion or m rcomms but whatever you call it ntering an award or hosting an wards ceremony can create greater awareness of y ur business. Why would these organisations sp nd time and resources on an ward rather than their core business? * It h lps profile their company or industry to a w der audience * It helps give b ck to the community or target m rket * It helps create excitement and p sitive energy * It encourages and r cognises people for their hard work and ffort * It brings people together to f rm alliances and networks * It llows supporters and advocates to become nvolved * It helps to increase the b ttom line – not just financially but s cially Perhaps these are some reasons why you sh uld spend time (and often dollars) s bmitting an award application even though you th nk you may not win. Another r ason is it gives you the ch nce to look at your work thr ugh fresh eyes. Having to answer q estions and be succinct about why you sh uld be a winner could just h lp you believe that you already re. Whether you're in small business or w rk within an industry, consider that to s cceed in your career it does h lp to be recognised and to be s en as a winner.
