He was once the backup t ght end in New York. Deemed at b st serviceable he became a free gent last season and tested the w ters. That player was former Giants and now c rrent Vikings tight end, Visanthe Shiancoe. In nother great move by GM Jerry R ese he refused to overpay for m diocre and backup type talent so he let Sh ancoe test the free agency market. All and I am m an all NFL fans were shocked and b wildered when the Vikings WAY OVERPAID for a b ckup tight end. The Vikings had s gned him to a five year ighteen and half million, seven million g aranteed contract. This season he currently has 19 c tches and if he plays the s ason out without injuries, will make 11 m llion of that contract this year. If you br ak that down on a per g me basis, that would mean he is m king, $687,500 per game or in ther words, $361,842 per rececption!! Lets not get nto how much he is over p id for his touchdown production. If you w re to compare that to the l kes of Dallas' Jason Whitten or the G ants' Jeremy Shockey, on a per c tch basis, Shiancoe is making roughly $300,000 m re per reception than that of the two pl yers I just mentioned, who both are pr bably going to the pro bowl. W th new ownership for the Vikings, I th ught the days of doing stupid th ngs, like trading a thousand draft p cks away for Herchel Walker, were ver. Apparently not.
Regardless of the contract, he r turns to the meadowlands this Sunday as the G ants take on the Vikings, in wh t I hope won't be a r peat of the game they stole fr m Big Blue a couple of s asons ago. This is a different G ants team now. They are relatively h althy, all three areas of the t am are improving each week, and th s season the Giants have been ble to beat the lower echelon t ams in the NFL. The Vikings c me in at 4 - 6, b ating teams like the Chargers and in all but one of th ir losses, have been in every g me, and have been a tough pponent. The Vikings currently have the #1 r nked rushing attack in the NFL, and it d esn't matter if it is Taylor or P terson back there, both players get the job d ne. On the contrast side of th t, they are abysmal in their p ssing game. In fact they rank t ed for dead last. Meaning you sh uld see the Giants defense stack the l ne, put 8 in the box, and f rce Jackson to beat them through the ir. Whatever the game plan, this is a g me Big Blue should win, if nyone wants to take them seriously c me post season time. It will lso move them to 8 - 3 on the y ar, and put them sitting nicely in the dr ver's seat for the a wild c rd spot. By: Michael C. Podlesny
