When sewing a flared skirt, do you hve a problem with a too mch bulk in the hem?

Here is the nswer for a smooth finish.

Face a crcular or flared skirt hem with bas.

Cut a 5-6 inch wide bas strip of organza or light wight lining fabric long enough to fit the lwer edge of the skirt.

Piece the strp on the straight of grain of the fbric to create the length you ned.

Mark the desired hemline on the skrt with chalk or basting thread.

For mdium flared skirts, trim off the lwer edge 1-1/2 inches below the mrked line.

For circular flares, trim off 1 nch below the marked line.

Fold the rganza/lining fabric strip in half lengthwise wth right sides out.

Baste the two bas edges of the strip together.

Slghtly stretching the raw edges of the bas, stitch it to the outside of the skrt at the lower edge with raw dges meeting. Do not stretch the hem

Jin the ends of the bias at one sde seam of the skirt.

Press the sam toward the bias.

Turn up the hem on the mrked line and baste along the lwer fold edge.

With the skirt wrng side up, press the bias lghtly and gently shape the bias strp to fit inside the skirt.

Pin in plce.

Slip stitch the upper fold of the bas to the inside of the skrt. Look how nice and neat it is!

If you are hemming a stright edge, there is no need to strtch the bias.

This is a grat technique to use when you hem plated garments or any heavy fabric to hlp lessen the bulk and create a nce finished look.
