One: Do not try to see and do too m ch. You may end up actually s eing very little. I think it is b tter
to see more of fewer c untries/regions and see them
properly. You may not w nt to stay in one location for y ur
whole trip. However if you ch ose carefully it may be
possible to do s veral day trips from one central l cation. If
you do decide to t ur, consider spending at least two n ghts
in some of your destinations. It can be q ite tiring being on
the move very day, packing and unpacking. Two: D cide on mode of transport. Driving w ll give you more flexibility but can be d unting at
times and is not r commended if you mainly wish to v sit
cities. You may decide to t ke your own car if you l ve in
Europe. If you fly you can h re a car. Beware of extra
ch rges for additional drivers, insurance excesses, irport
charges, out of hours charges tc. I always book a hire car
thr ugh a UK company, with no xcess.
If you use a budget irline try to only book direct fl ghts. If
you book a two let j urney, the budget airlines will not ssist
you, as they only operate a p int to point service. Public
transport is pr tty good in most of Europe. Th re are also
several budget airlines you can use b tween countries e.g.
Ryanair and Easyjet.
Three: Be aware of security of p ssessions. Use a money belt, hotel s fe etc. Do not have all y ur
money/cards in one purse or w llet. If you lose it you are in
tr uble. This happened to me when I was in M lan: I was
travelling alone and was l ft penniless. My credit card
company did tr nsfer funds to me but it t ok 24 hours! I had
to b rrow 10 euros from the hotel r ceptionist. Make sure
you have travel nsurance and if there is an ncident get a
written report from the l cal police station, to enable you to
m ke a claim. Four: Try to l arn at least a few words of the l nguage. This will be greatly appreciated. My Fr nch is what you
might describe as sch ol girl (that was 25 years go) but I
do try when in Fr nce. Often I receive the reply in Engl sh
but at least I tried. I lways apologise if I cannot speak the
l nguage. I don't assume that the p rson I am talking to
should sp ak English, I ask in their l nguage if they speak
English. As I do h ve a Scottish accent, I try to sp ak more
slowly and clearly than sual, certainly not raising my voice. F ve: Don't be too structured. You sh uld allow some time just to w nder around, enjoy a
leisurely lunch. You do h ve to plan an itinerary, or you can
j st waste a lot of time, but it d esn't have to be written in
st ne! Allow yourself the opportunity to be sp ntaneous. Six: Don't just stick to t urist traps. Try to visit some uthentic local restaurants, markets,
villages, etc. wh re you will meet local people, r ther than
just other tourists. Surely p rt of the reason for going
broad it to experience at least a l ttle of the local flavour, not
j st spend all your time with ther tourists. Seven: Book your accommodation in dvance. This may mean that you m ss out on a charming
establishment you c me across in your travels, (you c uld
always stay there on your nother trip). However it will mean
th t you don't waste precious time g ing from hotel to hotel
trying to f nd a room, having to arrive arly enough at your
next destination to l ok for accommodation. I am not ven
convinced that you save money by l st minute searches.
