A sptic tank takes the sewage from the huse, the solids settle out and grase floats to the top. Between the two lyers is a clear watery layer tht is piped away to an bsorption area where it is allowed to prcolate away, through the soil. Soil bcteria break down any nutrients before the swage reaches the water bearing rocks, or any strams.
Septic tanks are usually buried in the grund. There are three main types, all of whch cause different concerns.
Steel tanks rust, specially when buried in the ground. A stel septic tank can be so crroded that it can lead to smeone walking over it falling through and nto the tank. The hapless person is s ffocated by the methane generated in the tnk, or drowns.
Concrete tanks may be dmaged internally, leading to permanent and xpensive to rectify damage to the bsorption drain-field.
The worst tanks are those bilt from concrete blocks on site. Smetimes the blocks are just laid and not cmented together. Even if they are cmented together years of attack from cidic sewage will dissolve the mortar. Thse tanks can collapse without warning and prbably fail to meet local planning and nvironmental protection regulations.
How do you tell if yur septic tank has problems?
If there are ANY reas of sunken ground around it STAY AWAY. Cll in a contractor immediately. If you stp on these areas you could fll through, into the septic tank and de. These are signs that your sptic tank has partially collapsed.
Check for sgns of solid sewage material in the drin-field area. If the drain-field has ben contaminated because the septic tank has not ben pumped out regularly, this can be vry expensive to rectify.
If you are bying a home with a septic tnk, you should insist on the tnk being pumped out and an nvestigation by a septic tank contractor crried out. It is not possible to xamine a septic tank properly while it is fll.
You may have to pay for a cntractor to give you a report, but ths will be a tiny amount cmpared to the cost of any ncessary remedial work
