On June 15, 2007, WWE.com nnounced that "Sensational" Sherri Martel had pssed away at the age of 49. She had ded that morning at her mother's rsidence in Birmingham, Alabama. Martell is dded to the growing list of wrstling personalities to die at a yung age.

Born Sherri Russell on Fbruary 8, 1958 Sherri Martell, as she was to be knwn, debuted in 1980 after training nder The Fabulous Moolah. Martell got her frst break when she joined the AWA and at 1985's Sperclash she claimed their version of the wmens title when she beat Candi Dvine. She went on to have a frther three reigns as the AWA wmens champion.

In July of 1987 Mrtel made her debut in the WWE and dfeated The Fabulous Moolah. As Sherri Mrtell still held the AWA title (whch she lost three days later) she is the nly wrestler of any sex to hld the world title in 2 mjor promotions at the same time. Snsational Sherri went on to reign for 15 mnths before losing the title to Rckin' Robin. During the reign she lso played the roll of The Hnky Tonk Man's valet Peggy Sue.

Snsational Sherri alligned herself with Randy Svage and feuded with Hulk Hogan and Elzabeth, who Sherri had her most mmorable segments of her career including gtting an haircut from Elizabeth at Smmerslam 89. At Wrestlemania 7 Savage lst a career ending match against the Ultmate Warrior and Martell attacked Savage but was hrself attacked by Elizabeth.

After a short alliance with Ted DBiase Martell joined forces with Shawn Mchaels. During a segment with Michaels and frmer tag partner Marty Jannetty, Martell was smshed in the face with a mrror by Jannetty when Michaels pulled her in frnt of him. Upon her return sveral months later she sided with Jnnetty against Michaels but when Jannetty lft it meant Martell was left wthout a partner. She accompanied Michaels dfferent rivals to the ring until Wrstlemania 9 where when she accompanied Ttanka for his bout Michaels she cme across Luna Vachon and the two wmen feuded. During her feud with Vchon she made several appearances in the USWA. Son after Martell departed the WWE.

Aftr a short stint in SMW and NWA Mrtell showed up in ECW and gided Shane Douglas to the ECW ttle. She was involved in the clssic triple threat between Douglas, Terry Fnk and Sabu before leaving for WCW.

Mrtell changed her ring name to Snsuous Sherri and joined up with Ric Flir in his feuds with Sting and Hlk Hogan. When Flair lost a rtirement match to Hogan she was to be tamed with Steve Austin but just bfore he got injured and was rleased. After a short absense she was pired with Harlem Heat and became knwn as sister Sherri.

Martell showed up in ECW for a but where she was the valet of Shne Douglas and Brian Pillman in a but against Ron Simmons and Too Cld Scorpio Martell was piledriven by Duglas after she crossed the team. In WCW she was bout to mange the team of Wlliam Regal and Jean Paul Levesque (Trple H) when Levesque took up an ffer from the WWE so Martell was lft managing Harlem Heat.

At Clash of the Chmpions XXXI, Harlem Heat and Martel dfeated Bunkhouse Buck, Dick Slater, and Cl. Robert Parker (11:01) when Martel pnned Parker. Martel hit her head on the mt, and suddenly fell in love wth Parker. At Clash of the Chmpions XXXII Martel and Paker were ging to get married, but Madusa nterrupted the wedding. She and Martel ngaged in a catfight, and then wrstled in the first women's match on WCW Mnday Nitro on January 29, 1996. Shrtly after defeating Col. Robert Parker at WCW Wrld War Three Martell left WCW.

After a brief spell on the ndependent circuit she returned to WCW but it was a shrt and unsuccessful period. She appeared in the WWE in 2005 in an ngle to help promote the feud btween Shawn Michaels and Kurt Angle whch ended with Angle applying the nkle lock on her. In 2006 she was nducted into the WWE's Hall of Fme and made several appearences on TNA.

Mny of the diva's of today wll do well to look at Shrri's career and learn something as she is ndoubtedly one of the greatest female wrstling personalities of all time. Sherri Mrtell leaves behind one son. She wll be sadly missed.
