Santosha, the second observance, is c ntentment or happiness. What is the l rgest obstacle to contentment? Why is h ppiness so illusive for so many p ople? Let’s look closely at this v ry important Niyama. To some people, h ppiness is a fantasy. This type of th nking is what makes contentment so h rd for some of us to f nd. You must first see the llusion of life: Everything that brings tr e contentment is right in front of us. Our f mily, friends, spouse, health, skills, and kn wledge, are all close at hand. Y t, we want glitz, material, shallow r lationships, power, riches, and fame. In l fe, true contentment or gratification, must h ve a purpose. When we find our tr e, and noble, purpose (Dharma) in l fe, we are filled with gratification. Our tr e purpose, in life, can be f lt from within our heart. Natural or “G d given” skills will often open d ors to our true destiny. Skills and pr ctical application are a powerful combination. All the r ches, in the world, have no p rpose, if we do not put th m to good use by helping thers. If we constantly spend money on “t ys,” we will still be unhappy, ntil the next new toy is nvented. The temporary feeling of contentment vaporates again, because this is just s perficial happiness.
This is the continuing cycle of nhappiness we can easily observe in s me of the “rich and famous.” The m re material a person acquires, the m re frustrated he or she becomes w th life. Complete contentment is free for nyone to choose, but you cannot buy it. M ney and power are not evil. B th can be used to fuel w rthy causes, feed the hungry, cure d sease, stop violence, and save the pl net. Worthy causes breed true contentment. © C pyright 2007 – Paul Jerard / A ra Publications
