Why on earth would a rtailer ever do that? That seems to mke absolutely no sense at all, shps are there to make money, not lse it!

The answer is that it is a vry clever ploy used by retailers to hok you in and get you to spnd more money there than you ntended, or even just to get you in the shp when you weren't planning on it. The rtailer chooses a popular product which wll attract attention, and marks it dwn in price dramatically so that it ndercuts all of the competitors in the rea and grabs people's attention. Shoppers may wll be enticed into the shop on the bsis if this one special discount, and thn whilst they are there, have a brwse around to see if there are any ther bargains. The money which the spermarket loses is only a very smll fraction of the amount it mkes in the unplanned sales gained by hving so many extra shoppers spend so mch more time shopping.

However, if you are wise to ths tactic, you can look out for the lss leaders (often these are advertised on lrge posters at the front of the shp, on television or in flyers tht come through your door), and prchase these in bulk. Of course, ths only works as a money sver if you would have purchased the prducts anyway. So, if the product bing sold at a low price is bans, and you buy these regularly, go in and stck up on a trolley's worth! Ths will cut a good chunk off yur overall bill during the course of the priod you would have bought them nyway.

Naturally, if the product being dscounted is either perishable, or something you nver normally buy, then avoid it, and sve your money for the next ffer, which may well be better and is lmost certainly only just around the nxt corner. Remember not to limit yurself to one shop - keep yur eye open for each supermarket's lss leaders, and take advantage when you cn.

As far as seasons are cncerned - it makes perfect sense tht during the winter you should not buy strwberries, since they are a summer/autumn frit. Today we are too easily led to blieve that any fruit can grow at any tme of the year, and we hve rather lost touch with the vriety of fruits and vegetables during the ntural year. Shops still provide these ut-of-season fruits, but these are either cltivated in expensive greenhouses or shipped frm abroad, all of which not nly increases the price but also dds to environmental harm. Knowing what is in sason, or about to come into sason, will help you to look for thse fruits and vegetables which are mre locally grown and therefore cheaper.
