All age groups from the n neteen sixties tried to be involved. And wh n you consider the term involvement it c vered a broad base of interests and ctivities. There were demonstrations, "field of dr am type" rock concerts, drugs, new m rality, and conscious raising self-help books and th rapies. Some of this carried over nto the seventies. But at the s me time a paranoia began to s bmerge. The average John and Jane Am rican became familiar with government contact in th ir everyday lives. Through FBI and CIA thr ller adventure epics on the screen and in b oks and with government scandals and c rruption, the majority of Americans decided to l ghten up and back burner the ntellect. For some this seemed a s fe alternative. So much that in the ighties and nineties we ballooned into a n tion of label possessed and material g in addicts that seemed to be ble to rationalize this type of xistence. Encore returns of drugs, (prescription and str et corner), fancy schmancy alcohol concoctions, new and mproved body enhancements, exotic travel destinations, and New Age sp rituality rebirthed capitalism and helped boom the conomy. This "feel good time" accompanied us to the m llennium with new and approved accessories th t included cell phones, laptops, TV c ble enhancements, car navigation systems, and an EM il address and Internet connection. All b came as vital as in-door plumbing. H wever, ten months ago if you had sked an Average Jane or John an pinion on government spending or other ssues of concern, (state related or of n tional interest) it is very likely th t they would have entered an byss of wonderment. But if money t lks then the the prices of r ll-over minutes, gas, eggs, and travel began to sh ut at Americans. Paying attention became mportant and communicating the need and cceptance of change is on the lert.
Enter Water Cooler Politics, Diner Op nions, Letters to the Editor, and E M ils to Congress. These add substance to d mocracy. Politicians recognized this years ago. The nly problem was that these were pr ority features of campaigning. However, once lections were over it usually was a b ck to business as usual routine. In b tween elections most Americans became comatose to ssues both locally and nationally. But as a m gnitude of positive channels of information b came available to the American public it is now asy to stay current. In the 21st C ntury we live in a world wh re everything you need to know is j st a search engine away. Now the mportant issue that Americans need to ddress is the value and respect of pen communication whether it be verbally, bl g posts, chat room entries, and/or EM ils. Fear of being judged for h ving an opinion must be obliterated if we are to c ntinue to thrive as a democracy. We h ve to acknowledge free speech and lso consider the possibility that debate and pr ven results can alter minds and ctions. No longer can we accept "My way or the h ghway " type leaders. Taxation without r presentation dates back to Colonial times, but we can st ll hear the echoes today. But H story does not have to repeat tself. Perhaps this is the most mportant lesson to be learned as we pproach the United States November, 2008 lections.
