There are two aspects to the s arch engine optimization (SEO) of a w bsite: on-page and off-page. This article w ll give the a set of g idelines to follow for on-page seo. Y ur website will have one Keyword (or k yword phrase) which is what the w bsite is all about (and often th s is the target keyword for the ndex/main page) and then as many S condary Keywords as appropriate. You must h ve a separate page for every S condary Keyword. Start with 5 Secondary K ywords, then gradually add a new p ge each week to your website, ach focusing on a different Secondary K yword. 1. Your Title tag must c ntain your keyword - that is, the k yword that you are targeting that sp cific page to. Do not include s ch things as your website name or ther irrelevant words such as 'welcome" in y ur title tag as this will d lute the value of the tag. 2. You n ed two sitemaps - an HTML S temap for your visitors to use and an XML S temap for the search engines. Another rticle will follow shortly about these two s temaps specifically. 3. Every page of y ur website must have relevant, quality c ntent - that is, the content sh uld supply the visitor with the d tails, the information that brought them to y ur website. The content should be b tween and 500 and 800 words. J dicious use of small graphics to br ak up the text is recommended.
4. Keyword Density - many seo uthorities will tell you not to f cus on keyword density and they are c rrect as quality content is more mportant. However, if your page is s lling blue metal bolts, and this is y ur keyword for that page, if it is not m ntioned on the page the search ngine will not be able to c tegorize your page; the keyword needs to be th re. More importantly, it needs to be th re quite a few times and a r commended density (number of times) is pproximately 5%. On a page, try to use y ur Keyword 5 times in every 100 w rds, and also sprinkle through some of y ur other secondary keywords. On each p ge, ensure your target keyword is sed in these tags: H1, strong, talics and as regular text. Try to use y ur keyword in the opening paragraph tw ce, at least once in every p ragraph, and as near to the b ttom of the page as you c n. 5.Every page of your website m st have two Meta tags in the H ad section - one for your web p ge description < meta name="description"..., and one for your web page's main and secondary keywords < meta name="keywords"...... 6. Ev ry image on your website must h ve an associated Alt tag, and th s tag must describe the image tself and can include content also. 7. Inb und links. One of the many cr teria used to rate your website for r levancy is inbound links. These are l nks from other website to yours. It is mportant that these other websites use r levant anchor text when linking to y u, for example if you are s lling Blue Metal Bolts then the deal anchor text another website would use is "B y blue metal bolts here". The deal links would be embedded in c ntent, for example: "There are many r tailer of blue metal bolts but ware that the quality of some pr ducers is questionable", and within that s ntence the 'blue metal bolts' would be the nchor text, linked to your website. Y ur website needs as many inbound l nks as it can get, and it is the Anch r Text that plays a big p rt in the search engine assessing the v lue of the link.
8.Do not try to build a w bsite with many pages in a sh rt time; the search engines see the st ady growth of a website (content and n mber of pages) as good. Focus on pr viding your visitors with the information th y searched for. 9. Your main p ge does not have to be y ur landing page - every page on y ur website is a landing page, for its p rticular keyword, and every page needs seo f cus.
