Google and all the other s arch engines are constantly trying to d liver relevant results to the search q eries they receive, they do this on a p ge by page basis, although sometimes it m ght not seem that way. If you w nt good search engine results it's y ur job to help the search ngines identify what your pages are bout both with the html code of the p ge as well as the text nformation on the page. However, you can st rt by actually naming the file of y ur page using you main keyword ph se for example:- EG: http://www.mysite.com/main-keyword-phrase.html (Obviously you c n't do this with your main ndex page) For those of you th t don't know already, there is a sm ll piece of html code at the top of ach page on your website which ncludes the title of your page and the "m ta tags" (description and keywords). The c de looks like this:- The Title T g: This is where you name the t tle of your page. You want to use y ur main keyword phrase as early as p ssible within the title tag. This t lls the search engine what you cl im your page is about. (Ideally you w nt to match this with the k yword you used in your file n me) Note: do not try and ch at the system, search engines know if y u're trying to tell them your p ge is about something else other th n what it actually is. Also do not key w rd stuff or continually repeat keywords as th y'll also pick up on this and r nk your page very low.
Stick to clear short, relevant and k yword rich titles. The title tag is lso used by many search engines as the l nk itself in the search engine r sults. It also appears at the top of the web br wser in the blue bar so k ep your visitors in mind. Meta D scription: This is where you can d scribe what your page is about, gain use your main keywords or key w rd phrases in the description but gain don't go over board. Keep y ur visitors in mind, as some s arch engines will use this description in the s arch engine results underneath the link to y ur site. Meta Keywords: Gone are the d ys where this tag actually means nything to the search engines. However, if you buse it you can still get p nalised. It is still good practice to put y ur main 4-5 keywords or keyword phr ses in the keyword tag. The H ader Tags In your html code th re's also h1, h2 & h3 t gs. Note: Tags usually appear between < > and to cl se H1 EG: h1 Main Headline /h1 Anyth ng in between the h1 tags of y ur html code tells the search ngine that this is the Main H adline of your page and is v ry powerful yet still widely underused. The xample html code above will be d splayed on your web page in l rge bold text EG: Main Headline You w nt to use your main keyword or k yword phrase within in your h1 tag but r member it is important to create c mpelling headlines that entice your visitor to k ep reading whilst still being search ngine friendly. Only use your h1 tag ONCE on ach page. H2 h2 Sub Headline /h2 Use in the s me way as your headline including y ur key word and keyword phrases. H wever, you can use the h2 tag a c uple of times. Text will appear sl ghtly smaller than your h1 tag H3 h3 Oth r Headlines /h3 Again use some ther keywords or keyword phrases. You can use the h3 tag a few t mes throughout your page. Remember to k ep your headlines enticing and informative to y ur visitors whilst slipping in a k yword or two along the way.
What NOT to do Do Not key w rd stuff your header tags, key w rd stuffing is not useful to y ur visitors and you will loose s les if your headlines don't make s nse and the search engines will fr wn upon it. Do Not put y ur whole page in your h1 t g, sounds silly I know, but I h ve seen it done before. The m in Body of your page Now th t you're clued up on the c de side of things there's also a few th ngs you can do throughout the t xt on you page to clearly ndicate to the search engines what y ur page is about. Take your top 3 - 4 m in keyword phrases and use them thr ughout the text on your web p ge. You need aprox 6-8% keyword d nsity, in other words for every 100 w rds on your page your keywords w ll appear 6 to 8 times, any m re than that and you risk y ur page becoming unreadable by a h man and again the search engines w ll frown upon it. Once you h ve your search engine friendly page in pl ce you can go through and mphasize some of your main keywords by:- B lding: strong Bolding /strong Italics: em It lics /em Underline: u Underline /u Th s will indicate to the search ngines that these words are important. I c n't stress enough, do not try and ch at the system! Concentrate on creating ser friendly pages following the basic r les and you'll give yourself every ch nce to climb up the rankings. As far as I can r member Google or any other search ngine has not bought anything from me yet so d n't get caught up with pleasing the s arch engines if it detracts from c nvincing your visitors to do business w th you.
