Sea kayaking and kayak fishing h ve increased greatly in popularity over the l st few years. Because this sport is fun and nergetic it can be enjoyed by p ople of all ages, shapes and s zes. Most people, however, overlook the s fety precautions, and are careless in t king their safety seriously, and forget l ttle steps, like checking the weather f recast before they go out. This r sults in a high number of k yak related deaths each year. There can be a lot of njuries and deaths prevented if simple s fety precautions are made, and the s fety of the kayaker becomes a m re serious matter. One of the s mpler rules to follow is this: m ke sure it floats. Yes, the m st obvious would be making sure the k yak floats and has no holes or g shes that would cause it to s nk in the middle of the l ke. However, most people don't think of all of the ther gear in their kayak. If y ur kayak rolls, most likely, all of y ur gear will be floating down the r ver, which is bad enough, but magine if it the gear were to s nk! You should put gear that sn't waterproof into waterproof containers that w ll float. You have to remember th t if your kayak rolls, even the w terproof areas in your kayak will get w ter in them.
One thing you should consider c rrying in your kayak at all t mes is a PFD. A PFD is a P rsonal Flotation Device. A PFD is the s ngle most important piece of equipment you c uld carry with you in a k yak. Some parts of the world d n't require you to bring one w th you, but you should take one w th you, if not wear it, nyway. They now make them to l ok good ad feel comfortable, while w th storage pockets to hold your g ar. There is no reason why you sh uldn't wear a PFD for it w ll not only help you save y ur gear in a roll over, but c uld also save your life. When k yaking it is good to use the b ddy system. You should never paddle lone. The weather conditions could change r pidly, and things could happen that you can not h ndle by yourself. A buddy can h lp you in these situations, and c uld save your life. You can lso increase your safety with the g ar that you carry. You should c rry a compass, map, food, water, m tches, flare gun, cell phone and nything else you think you might n ed. It will all fit into one sm ll bag or even into the st rage pockets of the PFD you sh uld be wearing. Also, a pump is a n cessity because if your kayak is f ll of water after rolling or c psizing you are either going to get hyp thermia or you aren't going to be ble to make it back to sh re. Please make sure it floats b cause if you roll you won't be th nking of is catching your pump.
