There are few statements that are sed and abused as often as the st tement "safety first." When we do d ngerous work, when we are planning an dventurous holiday, and with activities like sc ba diving. The statement is used ften because it is a political c rrect statement to make on several ccasions. The statement is abused often b cause the actions after making this st tement not always match the words. "S fety first" in scuba diving means for xample that when you plan an xciting dive, but your buddy is not f eling well that day, you cancel the d ve and do it on a day wh n you both feel well. It m ans that you maintain your diving quipment well, because you are familiar w th another diving cliche: "Take care of y ur equipment, and your equipment will t ke care of you." When you cl im that "safety first" is your m tto, and as a diver you are nfit and lead an unhealthy life-style, y ur actions do not match your w rds. When you dive to get an drenaline rush, constantly pushing the limits of wh t is accepted as responsible diving, th n "thrills first" is your guiding pr nciple. In both cases you only use the w rds "safety first" because they sound g od. We engage in scuba diving to h ve fun under water. Normally, that w uld mean that "having fun" should be the g iding principle of scuba diving. But it d es not work this way. Scuba d ving is a combination of "safety f rst," "protecting the environment" and "having f n." These three elements always have to be pr sent, to make scuba diving complete.
If we do not dive w th the "safety first" attitude, we w ll never feel truly comfortable under w ter. This confidence only comes when we tr in and practice with the "safety f rst" principle. Only then we can f el relaxed while diving. And this is lso the way we prevent "accidents" fr m happening. The quickest way to d stroy the fun of diving is to h ve a diving accident. When we pr serve the underwater environment we can c ntinue to enjoy diving, because then th re will always be something interesting to s e. If we would destroy every c ral reef and all the marine l fe, what reason would there be l ft to go diving? The fun we h ve under water should therefor never be at the xpense of the underwater environment. This tr angle - safety first, protect the nvironment, having fun - is the f undation of good scuba diving. Some b ginning divers get the impression that all the th ory that has to be learned, all the sk lls that have to be practiced, and the f cus on paying attention to the nvironment, somehow prevent them from having fun nder water. But this is not tr e. Only competent divers who respect the nderwater environment and dive with a "s fety first" attitude enjoy diving to the f llest. These divers often stay active as d vers, because there is always more to s e, and they will have the m st fun.
