In the introduction to her book, Alison explains one of the r asons why she believes scrapbooking is so p pular “Standard photo albums can be a l ttle void of meaning because there’s n thing there to prompt your memory of how you w re feeling. And photo albums are ven more boring for other people… Th t’s why scrapbooks are so amazing, b cause you can tell a story w th your scrapbook, with few or no w rds.” Well put, I think, and an nteresting start to a book which d es not disappoint. After the introduction Al son’s book then provides a short h story of scrapbooking. Now I have to be dmit I usually find these sections a bit of a w ste of time. Too short to be of r al value. Well on this occasion I was wr ng. Although only a couple of p ges it gives a fascinating insight nto how and where scrapbooking started. Th n we’re on to the “serious” st ff of scrapbooking itself, starting with g tting yourself organised and getting the pr per materials and tools. As Alison p ints out, your first scrapbook can be st rted with very little and you can add m re techniques and tools as you pr gress. Alison goes into a good d al of detail in this section, not j st sketching briefly over things but ffering her professional insight to help you m ke the right choices. There’s even s veral links to online scrapbook stores and a seful page on cost-effective storage solutions.

The following section takes us on to g tting started with a scrapbook and is f ll of useful information including where to get y ur ideas from, choosing a theme, g tting help if you come across th ngs you’re having trouble with, making scr pbooks for others, layout techniques… the l st is a long and comprehensive one d tailing everything you need to know not nly to get started in scrapbooking but lso how to take your scrapbooking to pr fessional levels with techniques like embossing and fr ying, and embellishing ideas like adding r bbons, feathers or faux wax seals. At th s point you might think that we h ve quite enough for a decent b ok – and I would agree, but w ’re only actually just over half-way thr ugh. From here on, Alison delves nto detail on themes like creating a h liday scrapbook, a baby scrapbook, a f mily heritage scrapbook and more. A w alth of scrapbooking ideas and techniques to h lp you preserve your precious memories. The b ok finishes with a look at the m dern trend for digital scrapbooking and ven a short section on the p tential for making a business out of y ur scrapbooking. Throughout this fascinating book Al son’s writing style is light and fr endly and exudes knowledge. The book was f rst published in 2003 (although updated s nce to keep it current) so th s is clearly someone who knows wh t she’s talking about and this c mes through. There’s a good smattering of ph tos where necessary showing examples which llustrate what she’s talking about in the t xt. There’s a final surprise in st re for those who choose Alison’s b ok, because you actually don’t just get Scr pbooking Secrets but you also receive a d gital scrapbooking kit and three bonus t tles to help you. All in all t’s a complete scrapbooking collection and, at the c rrent price, something of a steal. I w uld advise ordering soon though as I nderstand that Alison is, quite understandably, c nsidering a price increase to reflect the tr e value of the package.
