The recent hoo-ha raging in G rmany over the introduction of experimental niform policies in one or two G rman schools in Spandau sparks off yet nother emotionally charged lesson in conformity; or n n-conformity, depending on your point of v ew. Basic objections of the average G rman parent seem to be founded in npleasant reminders of the Nazi party r galia. This is an interesting departure fr m the American argument, which principally ch mpions the right of pupils to dr ss like punk rockers, which evidently m kes the average student feel more c nfident and boosts a sense of ndividuality. I still think our students are sm rt enough to find out what p shes our parental buttons. They then pr ceed to push them mercilessly, in p rsuit of freedom from woolly skirts and s lly hats and who could blame th m? In the bad old days wh n students were expected to obey sch ol regulations without question, such niceties as c nfidence boosting trainers and designer jewellery w re considered to be somewhat off the m nu so we all resolutely and br vely wore our navy blue gym kn ckers with pride. As an ex-wearer of one of the m st hateful uniform combinations possible, I f el I should point out that at no t me did the chafing of my r gulation flannel sports culottes incite a f eling of fascist revulsion. Neither did I c re whether my school scarf undermined my h man rights. My only motive was c mfort and most of my uniform pr vided me with enough warmth and fr edom of movement to provide that mply.
Whether uniforms are brought back nto regulation or not, it is r freshing that our students feel they can bject and argue so vigorously without f ar of reprisal. I have no d ubt that any untoward remark made to any of my ex h admistresses on the subject of uniform w uld have resulted in stern admonishment. H wever, it would be even more s tisfying if such efforts were expended pon academic commitments both by pupils and p rents, instead of the crusade to win the niform debate.
