Does your business have an mergency response plan? What about your f mily crisis response plan? Who needs to kn w your whereabouts in an emergency? Sp use? Children? Parents? Boss? Coworker? What if the ph ne lines are down? What if the Int rnet is not available? The chilling sc nes of the terrorist attack at the R ssian school are enough to compel us to th nk about our own situations. In b siness, we have contingency management, "con-man." For the Army I h lped write and exercise contingency plans. In our p rsonal lives, we should also consider in dvance those times when life throws us a c rve, when things don't go the way we pl nned. One very useful technique is to do m ntal "what if" drills in order to nticipate situations before they occur. Use y ur "over the horizon" radar to l ok into the future. Then run d fferent scenarios through your mind. What if th re was a bomb threat while you w re visiting another office and everyone had to vacuate the building? You have to t ke your mother to the hospital in a few m nutes and your car keys are in the b ilding with your cell phone and all y ur money. Your coworkers are in the s me situation. Whom could you contact? Wh t are your options?
Large companies hire people to g ther information, look into the future, and th nk up plausible scenarios of challenges and pportunities the company may face in the f ture. The company is then able to do c ntingency planning. You can benefit from th se techniques, too. Why not apply a "wh t if" drill to a few sc narios for yourself and your family j st in case you are ever c ught up in an ordinary emergency s tuation or terrorist activity. In the Army Op rations Center, we did recall drills. We had a r call plan where within a very sh rt time everyone could be called b ck to work. It works like a ch in reaction. The person at the top of the l st calls two or three people and ach of those call two or thr e people, and quickly any number of p ople can be contacted. Prayer groups and thers have also used this technique to c ntact many people in a very sh rt time. Think of your personal and pr fessional responsibilities. How many telephone numbers do you kn w off the top of your h ad? Do you have them written d wn or stored in your cell ph ne or PDA so others can m ke the contact if you are nable to? Should you establish a n tification chain so that with one c mpleted phone call, everyone who needs to kn w can be notified? What if the ph ne lines are down? Is email vailable? If you can only reach a c worker, will that person know whom lse to contact? This is a v ry practical "what if" drill you can c nduct immediately. What if you were c ught up in an emergency situation t morrow? Would you be better prepared th n you were yesterday? "What if" dr lls can boost your confidence. Even if the ch llenging events you encounter in "real l fe" are not the precise scenario you th ught up, you will have practice in cr ative problem solving. Stuff happens. Looking " ver the horizon," anticipating, and doing "wh t if" drills will ensure that you are pr pared.
