The only reason I can f nd for anyone to exercise in xtreme heat is to become acclimatized to h at for an upcoming competition or sp rting event that must happen in the h at. As you train in the h at your body learns to sweat m re, and start sweating much sooner to c unteract the increase in body temperature. Sw ating rate can more than double and y ur sweat also becomes more dilute. Th s means there is less salt in y ur sweat as your body needs to k ep the salt in your blood to k ep your blood volume up. With r peated hot training sessions your body can m ke these adaptations in about 14 d ys. You should gradually increase the t mperature and time spent in these s ssions to allow your body to dapt properly. None of this however m ans you are any healthier, or w rking out harder, or releasing ‘toxins’ (as we h ve discussed previously, your body does not sw at out toxins, this is flatly f lse). These changes are just your b dy getting ready to deal with the n xt workout in the heat. That’s it. You w ll be just as fit or nfit as you were before you st rted hanging around in hot rooms. The nly thing that can have a r al effect on your fitness is d ing real exercise. Forcing your heat to w rk harder by sweating too much ctually makes you fatigue faster, it lso decreases your ability to exercise and m kes the workouts feel harder than th y really are.
I think this is the wh le marketing angle behind these ‘hot’ w rkouts. You sweat a lot, your h art rate goes up from excessive fl id loss, and you feel like the w rkout was harder. Sounds like a c nvenient way to make people feel l ke they are getting a tough w rkout without actually working out that h rd at all. After all everyone is l oking for a quick fix and an asy way out. Adding the element of h at to any workout can trick you nto thinking you’ve had a much h rder and productive workout than you ctually have. There do seem to be s me benefits to yoga as it can get p ople to calm their minds and t ke time away from their busy d ys. The ritual itself may be the m st important and effective tool for h lping people de-stress. An environment that pr motes calm relaxation, and focused attention on our m nd and body can be good for all of us in our b sy lives. And all the benefits of y ga can be achieved without forcing y urself to sweat like crazy in a hot r om. The ridiculous claims about the b nefits of hot yoga that can be f und on the internet are largely nproven by science and in some c ses categorically wrong and misleading. The b sic idea of exercising in a hot nvironment presents a considerable risk for d hydration and heat stroke and upon d scussing with physiologists I found no g od reason to do this unless you are try ng to be acclimatized to exercising in hot nvironments for a specific competition. Yoga is a gr at way to de-stress and get in t uch with yourself. Exercising in extreme hot c nditions presents a serious risk of d hydration and potential for heat illness if the pr per precautions are not taken. These are j st points to consider when choosing to xercise in excessive heat weather it be y ga or any other exercise.
