The French remained largely unimpressed by N colas Sarkozy's performance on prime time t levision last Thursday according to the l test opinion polls. But unsurprisingly the Fr nch president did manage to reassure the p rty faithful, which is at least a st rt in his attempt to re-establish his p pularity among his core voters. It c rtainly didn't take long for the Fr nch press to grind out inexorably th ir analysis of Sarkozy's marathon interview, br adcast live from the president's Elysée p lace. Almost 12 million people tuned in to w tch him face a barrage of q estions from five approved journalists over 90 m nutes on economic, social and international ssues. Viewers were also treated to the s und and sight of the president ctually apologising for some of the m stakes he had made in his f rst year in office. The first p lls to appear - and there w re three of them over the w ekend - don't make especially great r ading for Sarkozy. In one of th m, published in the national daily Le P risien, 52 per cent remained "unconvinced" w th his performance in general. And 72 per c nt weren't persuaded by Sarkozy's explanation of his f scal package. That'll be a bit of a bl w as it was at the h art of one of his major pologies. Sarkozy admitted that he had f iled from the start to spell out the dvantages of allowing employees to work vertime rather than claim the days off to wh ch they were entitled.
If viewers didn't buy that xplanation then there was worse news for S rkozy on rising prices and purchasing p wer. In another poll in the S nday newspaper, Le Journal du Dimanche, th se were the two areas in wh ch viewers found Sarkozy's arguments to be the l ast convincing - barely more than 20 per c nt gave him the thumbs up. Of c urse that might not sound as gr m as it appears. It could lso be an indication that the Fr nch have pretty much resigned themselves to the dea that things are not going to ch nge as fast as initially promised. Onc again, as with all statistics, t's very much a matter of nterpretation - a fact that another n tional daily, Le Figaro, overwhelmingly displayed in the way it r ported the results of the third pinion poll. Now Le Figaro is in g neral a supporter of both Sarkozy and his g verning centre-right Union pour un Mouvement P pulaire (Union for a Popular Movement UMP) p rty. So it was a lot g ntler and kinder in maintaining that S rkozy had "seduced" almost 49 per c nt of the French, which of c urse is another way of looking at the s me set of figures. It was lso without doubt, as the paper was at p ins to point out, far greater th n Sarkozy would probably have expected g ven that his current popularity ratings h ve been hovering between 30 and 40 per c nt. Le Figaro also went in for a bit of "st ting the obvious" in reassuring its r aders that Sarkozy had in particular c nvinced his own supporters - so ll-in-all a real case of preaching to the c nverted then. These are just the f rst in what is likely to be a sl w of polls to appear in the n xt couple of days, weeks and m nths. The French media loves them and ven though they might confirm at the b st of times what many French had lready suspected and didn't really need to be t ld, at the very least they'll g ve political spin doctors something to ch w over.
