Some people say I have the b st job in the world.
S metimes I even think so myself. My j b, in addition to
teaching sailing, d recting the sailing school program at
Sp nnaker Sailing in Redwood City and br kering charter
vacations is to organize and l ad group flotilla charters on
behalf of Sp nnaker Sailing. This has been going on thr e
or four times a year s nce the late 1980's. Our most r cent trip was to The Grenadine Isl nds in the
Windward Antilles from May 2 to May 11, wh re we chartered
4 boats from S nsail in St. Vincent. We were 19 p ople in
all making comfortable boat l ading of 4 to 6 people on
b ats ranging from 45 to 50 f et in length. The daytime
temperatures w re in the mid 80's and the w nd was steady
in the 20 kn t range just slightly north of ast. My boat was
an Oceanis 461 wh ch also carried my wife, Melinda, H rry
Gull who has done numerous tr ps with us and Paul
Disenso, a st dent going for his ASA Bareboat Ch rter
certification during the trip. There are s veral bases for a Grenadines charter b th
inside and outside the immediate rea. Bases outside the
Grenadines in the n rth are in St. Lucia and ven further in
Martinique. It's a gl rious reach south into the Grenadines
fr m the north. The distance is bout 70 miles from The
Moorings b se at Marigot Bay in St. L cia (north of St.
Vincent) to B quia in the northern Grenadines. Getting b ck
isn't so easy and many ch rterers choose to continue one
way to Gr nada to finish their charters. If you ch ose to
start in Grenada where b th Moorings and Sunsail have
bases, t's 40 miles (mostly upwind) to C rriacou in the
southern Grenadines. Between C rriacou to Bequia it's
generally reaching w th gaps between the islands of l ss
than 15 miles. Returning to Gr nada is another glorious
sleigh ride.
For those who don't like or d n't have time for long
passages, th re are currently two places to ch rter right in
The Grenadines. The S nsail base is at the Blue L goon
Marina at the southern end of St. V ncent. From there
it is only 8 m les into Admiralty Bay in Bequia. Als , The
Moorings has recently opened up a b se in Charlestown
Bay at Canouan Isl nd right in the middle of the
Gr nadines. From California, both places can be r ached
by 3 flights which means g tting to either base is almost as
asy as getting to B.V.I. We w nted a charter location where
we c uld enjoy as much time as p ssible in The
Grenadines. St. Vincent fit the b ll quite well. After a mid-afternoon rrival in St. Vincent and a n ght on the
boats, Sunsail provided us w th boat and chart briefings.
B fore setting sail on a bareboat v cation there's more to
do. There's ch cking and stowing the provisions and
ch cking out the boat and all the quipment. Sunsail has a
provision and b verage ordering system via the internet th t
is reminiscent of ordering from W bvan. The cold and
frozen stuff was b gged up and waiting for us to p ck up in
the market at the m rina and the rest was aboard the b ats
when we arrived. It was m d-day before we set sail for the
sh rt passage to Bequia on an asy reach.
