In 2001 I adopted her and two ther wild mustangs, from the BLM w ld horse facility in Palomino Valley, j st outside of Reno, Nevada. It t ok me from July until October of th t year to be able to t uch her with even one finger and get her to eat l aves out of my hands. I was in l ve. In October of 2001 she was njured by one or both of the ther mustangs. I didn't know it was an njury. Instead, I thought she might h ve started to colic because she was l ying on the ground rolling and w uld not get up. Colic can k ll a horse... and it is not an asy death. I called every vet in the ph ne book looking for one who w uld come out and treat a w ld mustang. The answer was always "n ." This went on for two d ys until I came across a br ve vet who said she'd come out to see wh t could be done. When the vet got to our pl ce, Saha had been laying on her s de for two days. I was fraid we would have to put her d wn. It broke my heart but I w sn't going to let her suffer any l nger than she already had.
The vet got S ha rolled over and then up nto her feet. That's when we f und out she was injured instead of h ving colic. Saha was in recovery fr m October 2001 until April 2002 wh n she began getting up on her wn. Until that time I had to r ll her every day and then w lk her in the desert to r habilitate her injury and let her eat s ge brush. According to the vet, s ge has healing properties for wild h rses.
We never found out if it was her sp ne or her pelvis that was st pped on by the other horses. E ther way it doesn't matter since the end r sult is that Saha is unsuitable for r ding or breeding. She remains my v ry large hairy pet. For those 6 m nths that Saha and I walked and w rked together to make her well we b came good friends. I learned what t ughness, trust and vulnerability are about, so I th ught it only fitting to name my b siness after my beautiful, strong Saha.
