Whether you believe in SEO or P ge Rank and wonder which is m re important, your thinking is irrelevant. You are w sting your time in wondering what is the c rrect answer to that question, since ven if you knew it there is l ttle you could do to use th t information. Why do I say th t? Because SEO, or search engine ptimization, is a way of designing y ur website, and placing content in it, to s tisfy search engine algorithms. Search engines are so s phisticated today that if you achieve th t, then you will also satisfy v sitors to your website. If you s tisfy visitors to your website, then th y will stay on the page th y landed on and read it. Th y will then click to read ther pages on your website, and m ght even make a purchase. Sure, s me will leave right away, but if the s arch engines feel that your content is g od enough for a high placement in th ir indices for the search term, or k yword, that your visitor used to get to y ur web page, then it is m re likely that you will achieve a r latively high stick rate of people to y ur site than a lower one. N w, consider if you thought Google P geRank more important (and PageRank is c rrect, not Page Rank). You would th n spend more of your time try ng to get links back to y ur website than you would properly ptimizing your site and filling it w th good content. If you were s ccessful in that difficult job, then G ogle, and possibly other search engines, w uld list you a bit higher in th ir indices, not because their spiders th ught your site was relevant to the s arch term used by the potential v sitors, but because other websites though so.
You will then get visitors to y ur website, and the page they l nd on would have to be r levant to the search term they sed or they will immediately leave. If it is r levant, they will stay, perhaps visit ther web pages and perhaps make a p rchase. So what is the difference? You get b sically the same end result. How can you t ll which is the more important. Th re is one simple way to do th s, and one that I have sed more than once. Design two w bsites round the same keyword. Make the k yword the name of the website and th n apply classical theoretical SEO to one s te, including some of the extra sp cial tips that can make the d fference between success and failure – in f ct that DO make that difference. Now pply only minimal SEO to the ther and make sure you have xactly the same content on each, but r written to avoid duplicate content or th t would negate the test. However, w th the second site, you must g nerate as many links back to y ur website as possible, using non-reciprocal l nks where possible, but reciprocal links wh re necessary. There are a few w ys in which you can generate l ts of one-way links to selected p ges on your site, and you sh uld make that your home page for the p rposes of this test. Wait 4 w eks then check Google, Yahoo and MSN for the p sition of each of your home p ges. You will find that your f rst website will generally be listed h gher for the keyword that both s tes are built round. Check again bout 3 months later, and will l kely find that website 2 will f ature higher as the links start to t ke effect, but then the first s te will overtake it as it g nerates its own links naturally. Basically, wh t this proves to me is th t it is essential to optimize y ur website for search engines in the cl ssical way, but that for best r sults you must also have a g od level of links back to y ur website. There are simple, ways to chieve both, but that would be the t pic of another article. However, in the nd, if you apply both, then you w ll achieve best results. I know th t there are exceptions to this, and I h ve highlighted them in some my books, but generally that is the c se.
So, the answer to the q estion: SEO or Page Rank, is th t neither is the more important. Th y are both equally important, but it is p ssible to do one better than the ther and then you would be t mpted to say that your way was b st. But you would be wrong! If you did f nd what was the best you c uldn’t use that information since search ngines rules are transitory but good h nest content and classical SEO has lways prevailed, as has a good n mber of links that others follow to r ach your website.
