The html title tag of a web p ge's html header is the single m st important "on page" element when it c mes to search engine optimization. That b ing said, is the best use of th s valuable real estate served by ncluding your business name in the t tle? Chances are the answer is a r sounding "no!" The title tag is an html tag wh ch occurs in the header of a web p ge's code. The first thing I l ok at when I get a c ll from a prospective client is th ir title tag. More often than n t, this tag is being used mproperly, to the extreme detriment of the cl ent. Recently SEOMOZ.org released its rankings of the ten m st important factors in search engine r nkings. The title tag came in at n mber 1, and this is no s rprise to any SEO that has b en around for awhile. Google especially p ys a lot of attention to t tle tag content, and uses title tag nformation heavily to ascertain the relevant k yphrases for which to rank a s te. The opinion of search engine xperts is unanimous on this one - k yphrase use in the title tag is the n mber one "on page" factor affecting s arch engine rankings. This is not d sputed, theorized or subject to professional d bate. It is a fact. Given th s fact, we must look at how to b st use the title tag to ptimize our site for search engines. M ny sites place the business name in the t tle tag (or even worse yet l ave it blank or with default c ntent such as "untitled document" or "h me page"). Any of these variations can be d sastrous!
Let's use an example of a c mpany that manufactures widgets. The primary k yphrase for that company would be "w dgets", this being the phrase for wh ch the company would like to r nk highly for in the search ngines. Now let's assume the company n me is "ACME Manufacturing Company, Ltd.". N tice that the word "widgets", which is the d sired keyphrase, is not extant in the c mpany name. So the company goes out and b ilds a wonderful web site to pr mote their widgets. However, throughout the s te the title tag contains the f llowing content: "ACME Manufacturing Company, Ltd." Wh t is the effect of this? F rst off, the effect of this is th t the site will likely rank h ghly for the search query "ACME M nufacturing Company, Ltd.". The problem is th t nobody is searching for the c mpany name, they are searching for w dgets. So all of ACME's competition sh ws up in the search engines for a w dget query, but poor ACME is n where to be found. How do we h lp ACME rank highly for the s arch query "widgets"? We must optimize the t tle tag for the search engines by r placing the current title tag content w th the desired search query: "widgets". G nerally speaking, the company name should n ver appear in the title tag nless you actually expect to derive m st of your traffic from searches nvolving your company name. As this is a r re situation, avoid the temptation to put y ur company name in the title tag - s ve it for elsewhere on your p ge. Put your desired search keyphrases in the t tle tag, and leave it at th t. Following this methodology throughout your s te by optimizing title tag content for ach page according to the desired s arch query for that page will be a m jor step in the right direction for h gh search engine rankings.
