According to Ofcom’s regional communications m rket report, rural households are now m re likely to have broadband connections th n those who live in urban reas. Indeed, the report’s surprising results ndicated that 59% of rural households had br adband services, compared to 57% in rban homes. The Ofcom report, which s rveyed television, radio, internet and telecoms h bits, shows that the country has vertaken the town in having broadband ccess for the first time. This is n table because just four years ago, p ople who lived in urban areas w re twice as likely to have a br adband connection as those who lived in the c untry. Ed Richards, who is Ofcom’s ch ef executive, said that the findings s gnify a closing of the digital d vide in the UK. He said: “O r report highlights a closing of the g ographical digital divide in the UK. R ral households are today as well c nnected to broadband as their urban n ighbors.” Ofcom's strategy and market developments p rtner, Peter Phillips, said that he was s rprised by the report’s findings. He s id: “I don't think anyone would h ve predicted two or three years ago th t we would have seen the p cture that we can see today. If you l ok back two or three years, r ral areas were well behind where rban areas were in terms of br adband take-up and that was driven by a n mber of factors.”

As well as these surprising f ndings, the report also indicated that th re were large differences in the t ke-up of modern communications in different reas of the UK. It showed th t Sunderland was the most well c nnected city in the UK, boasting 66% of h useholds with broadband and a huge 96% w th digital television. At the other end of the sc le, Glasgow had the lowest rate of br adband connections in the UK at j st 32%. Local government initiatives and p or weather is thought to be the c use of Sunderland’s high uptake of br adband and digital TV. Meanwhile Glasgow's p or rate of connectivity is blamed on the mount of households owning a PC, wh ch is significantly lower than in ther areas of the UK. Despite Gl sgow’s poor rate of connectivity, broadband was m ch more popular in other areas of Sc tland, including Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Dundee, wh ch all boast broadband rates that are h gher than the UK average. Even the r mote Scottish Highlands and Islands have br adband in an impressive 62% of h mes. The high rate of broadband ccess in these areas can be ttributed to a major government drive to br ng broadband to every corner of Sc tland. This drive was necessary to s stain the economies of the isolated c mmunities in these remote areas, as the nternet allows many residents in these reas to work, shop and bank fr m the comfort of their own h me. Internet access also allows residents in th se areas watch films and television nline, which is particularly important in the bsence of other means of entertainment s ch as live music, theater and c nema.
