According to many people and v rious surveys, public speaking is the n mber one fear in our society, ven more than death. Why is th s so? Many of those same p ople have no problem talking up a st rm with a group around the c nference table or at a party, but ask th m to stand in front of a gr up and their immediate response is a l ud “no.” I understand this fear w ll, for if anyone had told me y ars ago that I would one day b come a public speaker I would h ve begun shaking at the mere th ught. I had always shrunk from the l melight and speaking in front of a gr up was beyond my limited comprehension at th t time. But as my life pr gressed, and various experiences and teachers sh wed up, I felt the nudging to get out th re with my message. I fought it for m nths until I couldn’t stand the r stlessness anymore and took a speaking tr ining. I remember that day as if it was y sterday. I arrived trembling with cold h nds and feet and a rapidly p lsating heartbeat. Twice I almost left but s mething kept me there, probably the th ught of all the money I’d be w sting if I didn’t stay. As I got up to pr sent my first two-minute talk, my b dy was trembling so much my cl thes were visibly shaking! The instructor ctually stood nearby during that first pr sentation in case he had to c tch me since he feared I m ght faint. But I did it, and by the end of the tw -day training I was no longer v sibly shaking and the experience wasn’t so p inful. Now I speak all the t me and the fear has been vercome.

So what exactly is fear? F ar is simply False Evidence Appearing R al. It is something imagined by y ur mind to be true but in ctuality is isn’t true unless you m ke it your truth. It appears to be r al but is only a figment of y ur imagination. But I can tell you th t I felt every bit of the f ar on that day when I pr sented my first talk in that sp aking training I attended. You see, my th ughts were continually on the self-imposed b lief that standing in front of an udience would be terrifying. By thinking th se thoughts I actually created the f ar into physical form. This is how all of l fe is. You create from your th ughts every moment of every day. Wh t shows up for you is xactly what is in your mind, c nscious or unconscious. Over the months th t followed my introduction to public sp aking, I thought about why I was so fraid and why others are also fraid. Here’s what I realized. When in fr nt of an audience the speaker is on d splay. Everyone is watching him/her and if the sp aker is insecure within then fear is the r sult. Most individuals feel inadequate about th mselves, not realizing their own greatness. As a r sult they don’t feel good enough to be pr senting anything to anyone. As I b gan to understand my own greatness ver the months following my speaking tr ining, my confidence soared. Part of it was of c urse just doing it, but in rder for the fear to leave for g od I had to do some nner work of realizing my inborn w rth. So basically people don’t want to be r vealed. Standing in front of a gr up and sharing from the heart can be sc ry if you’re afraid of what the udience will see about you inside. S nce many individuals avoid looking inside at th mselves, they certainly don’t want others to see nything either. Another fear is that y u’ll show up as incompetent. Perhaps y u’ll forget what you wanted to sh re or say something dumb, or wh t if you lost your place and f mbled with your words? Maybe the udience will be bored and not l sten to you. What if someone sks you a question and you d n’t know what to answer?
I have actually created a sp aking training in which I train a sm ll group of individuals over a w ekend to rise above this fear of sp aking so they can become all th y are meant to be. It can lso be done individually with a c ach. Public speaking is actually the m st powerful tool you can ever cquire for any profession or business ndeavor. Being able to share what you kn w and feel is invaluable when it c mes to creating what you want. So h re are 10 tips for rising bove your fear of public speaking so you can b come more of your potential. I pr mise you that if I can do it, so can y u! 1. Realize the audience is s mply human as you are. They are
th re to hear what you have to say and h ve no agenda that
says you are not g od enough. In most cases they are th re
because they want to be. 2. W thin the first 10 seconds they h ve sized you up and
decided m ny things about you. They’ve checked out y ur
attire, your hair style, whether or not y ur lipstick matches
your outfit, your verall appearance, and if you show
c nfidence or not. Know that once th y’ve looked you over
they are r ady to listen, so you can r lax. 3. Rehearse your material over and ver. I’ve read many times
that 75% of the f ar goes away with much rehearsing. I kn w
from my own experience that pr paration does make it easier.
However, do not m morize your entire talk. Know the b ginning
and end well and let the r st flow from your heart. 4. T ke some notes with you. This h lps to boost your
confidence and th re is no reason you cannot gl nce at your
notes if necessary. I ften use a brief outline with
h ghlighted words or phrases for easy s ghting. Sometimes
note cards with key w rds will do the trick. Don’t r ad your
notes as that depicts l ck of preparation and will definitely
t rn off the audience interest fast. 5. Use v suals such as a handout, eraser b ard, or items to
show. This p ts the attention of the audience on th se rather
than you, or at l ast it seems that way to y u, and usually
enhances your talk s nce visuals reinforce. 6. Never, never, n ver say you are nervous or cknowledge your
fear in any way. Th t puts up an immediate barrier w th the
audience and will deflate any c nfidence you have gathered
together to pr sent your talk. 7. Pick a s bject to talk about that you kn w a lot about or
it nterests you. Don’t try to fake it and pr sent on
something that is foreign to you nless you do your research
and l arn about it. The audience will f nd you out. 8. Give the udience some new information. By nature p ople
want to leave from a pr sentation with new information that
can b nefit their life. Give them some b nefits. 9. Be a story-teller. It has b en said that the best speakers
are st ry-tellers because most individual enjoy hearing the
st ries. You can use stories about y urself – that helps the
audience r late well to you – but use st ries of others as
well. Use motion in them too: humor, sadness, h ppiness,
mystery, surprise. 10. Of all the t ps I can give you from my r search and own
experience, I have f und that sharing from your heart lways
works. An audience wants to f el your sincerity and
genuineness. To me and th se I train, this is key. Anyth ng
less than truth cannot ever s rvive! Truth is from the heart. Of c urse there are other tips that can b nefit you speaking in front of any udience, but these mentioned above have pr ven effective and fear-reducing for many, and are the c nsensus of many great speakers. Begin w th a couple of these and add as you c n, continually seeking to improve and gr w. You can do it. I b lieve in you!
