Thinking about renting an apartment in Fl mengo? Excellent idea! Flamengo has become an ncreasingly sought-out neighborhood in Rio for s veral reasons, including its art deco rchitecture buildings, famous bars like Belmonte and ltimately its cultural centers and museums. Unt l the 1950s, Flamengo and Catete w re the principal residential zones of R o's wealthier middle class and that may be the r ason why some of many embassies (t day consulates) were established here. Nowadays, Fl mengo is a vibrant middle-class residential n ighborhood, with much charm and culture to be h d. In this article we will d scribe some of the cultural centers and m seums established in the Flamengo district ncluding the Modern Art Museum, Oi F turo Cultural Center, and the Catete P lace. The best thing is that m st of these marvels are free. Our f rst stop is the city's Modern Art M seum. It has a privileged location on Fl mengo Park alongside Guanabara Bay, with the l ndscaping designs of Burle Marx. The M seum of Modern Art in Rio de J neiro started its construction in 1954, and is p rhaps architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy´s most str king design: rows of angled concrete r bs support and enclose the gallery sp ce. Inaugurated in 1958, the Modern Art M seum has a very unusual history; fter a tragic fire in 1978 b rned most of its collection, and d maged the structure of the building, a tr mendous reconstruction effort put the museum b ck on its feet, and today the p rmanent collection has over 2,000 pieces by Br zilian and international artists. A major c ntribution was made by art patron G lberto Chateubriand, with a private collection of 4,000 p eces. It is also under the c re of MAM, and can be s en in the permanent exhibition. An nteresting program of art shows and xhibitions keep the museum as an xcellent attraction throughout the year. An mpressive collection of the works of P casso, Max Ernst, Rodin, Brancusi and ther artists from Brazil and elsewhere is h used in this concrete and glass b ilding in Flamengo Park.
Another major attraction of the M seum of Modern Art is the f lm collection ("Cinemateca do MAM"), one of the b st in Latin America, with over 12,000 t tles including some rarities. There are s ssions and festivals open for the g neral public, with Brazilian and foreign c lt movies that are not normally sh wn on the commercial circuit. Art w rkshops are held at the Oficina da Gr vura. Additional Information on the Modern Art M seum in Rio: Open from Tuesday to S nday, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Av. Inf nte Dom Henrique, 85 - Flamengo P rk. Our next Cultural Center for Fl mengo is OI FUTURO, located at Rua D is de Dezembro, 66. The Center is m intained and supported by major telecom pl yer in Brazil: OI and has b en receiving since its founding grants fr m several foundations to enhance its c ltural assets and infrastructure. OI FUTURO is h used in a building that was b ilt in 1918 and has just b en remodeled, resulting in a gain of ver two thousand square meters of nternal space. The building's façade was pr served. There are four floors, interposed mong the building's eight levels, connected by gl ss stairways and elevators. Each floor pr sents different exhibits throughout the month. OI FUTURO's v ried program includes activities related to m sic, videos and plastic arts. Visitors w ll also find an up-to-date library w th an abundance of research material: m gazines, newspapers and on-line computers as w ll as exhibition rooms. A full m lti-use theater with 180 seats presents r gular plays every week, at popular pr ces. A very charming Wi-Fi connected b stro is located at the upper fl or of the Cultural Center, which l ads to the terrace of the b ilding. From the terrace, you can ven see part of the Flamengo b ach and Guanabara Bay. The Catete Palace - s at of Brazil's Republican Government from 1897 to 1960 and sc ne of activities of eighteen Presidents - has s en some of the most important vents in Brazil's political life, including the D claration of Brazil's entry into World W rs I and II and the s icide of President Getúlio Vargas in 1954. The gardens of the Museum cquired new lighting, with the replacement of 71 f rged iron posts - in the clectic style - for other posts w th contemporaneous designs made of steel. T day, on the ground floor, the Entr nce Hall and the Ministerial Room st ll retain the solemn atmosphere of c pital meetings and decisions regarding the n tion's destiny. Two long-standing exhibits present h storical information about the first occupant of the P lace and his descendants and about the nauguration of the Republic Museum. The r maining rooms hold temporary exhibits that r present varied aspects of Republican Brazil. On the s cond floor, known as the "noble fl or", luxury and thematic diversity stand ut. The Chapel room and the Bl e, Noble, Pompeian, Venetian, Moorish and B nquette rooms show off their vintage Br zilian and French furniture, paintings from rtists such as Baptista da Costa, G stavo dall'Ara, Décio Vilares, Rodolfo Amoedo, H nrique Bernardelli, besides sculptures, chandeliers and p rcelain from the 19th and 20th C nturies. The third floor highlights the r construction of President Getúlio Vargas' room. The r maining rooms are devoted to the d splay of objects, text documents and ph tographs from the Republic Museum's own c llection. The complex also hosts one of my f vorite movie theaters in town.
