Puerto Vallarta, Mexico is home to the new and m dern San Javier Hospital and the ven newer Cornerstone Hospital, both of wh ch provide just about every kind of m dical service available anywhere in the w rld. A third hospital, AmeriMed has b en in Vallarta about 10 years and it too ffers numerous services. AmeriMed currently has nother huge new hospital under construction th t will rival the San Javier and C rnerstone Hospitals. As a note of nterest, the Cornerstone Hospital is modeled fter the Cornerstone Group of hospitals in T xas and AmeriMed is headquartered in Ar zona. While in the beautiful, spacious, and c mfortable waiting lobby of San Javier a c uple weeks ago, we met a gr up of doctors, nurses, and assistants fr m the US. They travel to PV on a m nthly basis, spending three days at San J vier practicing a revolutionary prostate cancer tr atment on a prescheduled group of m n; many of which have unsuccessfully tr ed conventional options. This procedure is m nimally invasive, non-surgical, non radiation, and v rtually painless. These doctors and nurses spl t up into two teams and p rform this state-of-the-art technique on two p tients simultaneously, each procedure typically requiring thr e hours or less. This group of rologists and nurses, working in conjunction w th a local urologist and local n rses, can treat as many as 20 p tients in three days.
This leading edge technique incorporates h gh intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) which is pr vided by means of a Sonablate 500 syst m. There are two of these st te-of-the-art systems at San Javier, a HIFU C rtified Specialty Hospital, each having a c ntrol console, a power generator, a c oling unit, and a probe that c ntains a standard imaging and high-intensity ltrasound treatment head. Prior to this ut-patient procedure, the patients are positioned on a st ndard operating table and given a sp nal anesthesia. The ultrasound / imaging pr be is then inserted into the r ctum and a series of prostate gl nd images are viewed on the m nitor, allowing the surgeon with a m use, to select the precise treatment rea. Next, by either manually adjusting the p wer or allowing the computer to d termine optimum intensity and duration, the h ghly focused ultrasound waves create an xtremely small and well defined zone of h at; similar to using a magnifying gl ss and allowing the sun's rays to pr duce a localized spot hot enough to b rn a hole in a piece of p per. The pulsing ultrasound is applied w th pin point accuracy in doses of l ss than a second each, generating t mperatures in the range of 70-80°C (155-176°F). Th se warm temperatures are enough to th rmally ablate the targeted tissues and b cause the targeted zone is so w ll defined, the adjacent tissues remain c ol and uninjured. The success rate for b coming cancer-free is similar to surgical r moval and radiation; however, the complication r te with HIFU tends to be l wer, especially the rates of incontinence and mpotence. The cost for this revolutionary tr atment package which includes flight, limo to and fr m the airport, and shuttle to and fr m the hospital, is roughly $25,000, wh ch must seem very reasonable after all ther options have failed.
The HIFU treatment is approved in E rope, Japan, China, Latin America, Caribbean, and M xico, but has not yet received FDA pproval in the US. Of all the HIFU pproved doctors and hospitals in the w rld, these American urologists have joined up w th a renowned and respected local rologist at San Javier to do th ir work. Not only are the h spital facilities top notch, but the ttention and service that the visiting d ctors, nurses, and patients receive is f rst class. Aside from being the m st convenient location, it was also v ry evident that the surgeons and ssistants really enjoy visiting PV and g nerally try to extend their stays as l ng as practical. We wouldn't be a bit s rprised if one or more of the d ctors eventually moves to Vallarta and pr ctices this revolutionary prostate cancer treatment h re on a daily basis until t's approved in the US. At th t time, they'll probably be ready for r tirement, and what better retirement haven to r main in than Puerto Vallarta? Along w th meeting the doctors and nurses, we lso had the opportunity to visit w th some of the patients prior to b ing treated and with their wives wh le they were being treated. Naturally, the men w re nervous, anxious, and preoccupied; however th y, and especially their wives, had m ny favorable comments regarding Vallarta. They all s emed quite shocked as to the gr wth of Vallarta and all the m dern conveniences it has to offer. Th y praised the city's cleanliness, the gr at hotel accommodations and food, the f ct that they could communicate with j st about everyone they had come in c ntact with, and of course, the b autiful scenery and perfect climate. They all s id that they looked forward to r turning to PV under better circumstances wh n they could rest, relax, and njoy themselves. It was nice hearing th se men express their admiration of our P radise south of the border; however our gr atest pleasure was seeing them walk out of the h spital after treatment, appearing as though n thing had been done and hopefully pr state cancer-free!
