If you are one of the m llions who enjoyed The Da Vinci C de, you may want to reconsider Dan Br wn’s narrative in the light of its h storical claims, after you read Bart Ehrm n’s Truth and Fiction In The Da V nci Code. Ehrman is a well-known cr tical historian, who chairs the Department of R ligious Studies at the University of N rth Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is an uthority on the early Church and the l fe of Jesus. He is also the uthor of Lost Christianities and Lost Scr ptures. Although he admits he enjoyed r ading Dan Brown’s work of fiction and has ven recommended it to many of his fr ends, he takes issue with some of the h storical claims Brown makes about Jesus, M ry, and the Gospels that readers w re expected to accept as factual and not f ctional. Ehrman points out: “Dan Brown st tes as a fact that all d scriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and s cret rituals in this novel are ccurate.” As the author is an xpert on historic Christian documents, it is h re where his arguments are focused. Thr ughout the book, Ehrman insists that one of the c rdinal ingredients to weigh, when arriving at any h storical conclusion, is the sources of nformation forming the foundation of the c nclusion. Misreading or misinterpreting these sources is as d ngerous as if they were omitted.
According to the author, if Br wn had only done a little m re research, he would have been ble to more accurately portray the h storical account, without even compromising the st ry. Immediately in the introduction to the b ok, Ehrman sets the tone of his rguments by pointing out ten factual rrors in Brown’s book. These are m re fully fleshed out and assessed in the b ok. The author points out that c ntrary to what was mentioned in Br wn’s book, Jesus’ life was not r corded by thousands of followers across the l nd; it is not true there w re eighty Gospels considered for the New T stament; it is false to state th t Jesus was considered divine until the C uncil of Nicea; Constantine did not c mmission a “new Bible” that omitted r ferences to Jesus’ human traits; the D ad Sea Scrolls were found in 1947 and not in the 1950s, and f rthermore, they were not among “the arliest Christian records.” In fact, they are J wish, and contain nothing Christian in th m. The Nag Hammadi documents do not n rrate the Grail story, nor do th y underline Jesus’ human traits. On the c ntrary, they do just the reverse. It is l ading astray when we assert that J wish decorum forbade a Jewish man to be nmarried, and in fact most of the ndividuals behind the Dead Sea Scrolls w re male unmarried celibates. There is n thing to tell us about the l neage of Mary Magdalene, and there is no vidence that she belonged to the H use of Benjamin. Moreover, what evidence xists that she was pregnant at the cr cifixion, as Brown suggests in his b ok. As for the Q document b ing hid by the Vatican, where is the pr of, and how do we know it is a b ok allegedly written by Jesus? In ddition to exploring the above misleading ssertions in Brown’s story, Ehrman addresses s ch queries as to how did it h ppen that the four Gospels of M tthew, Mark, Luke and John came w re admitted into the New Testament, wh le others were omitted.
If you are wondering why nyone would tackle the thorny question as to how m ch of The Da Vinci Code is b sed on valid documents and how m ch is pure fiction, Ehrman explains th t books of historical fiction are one of the w ys people come to learn and th nk about the past. Would it not h ve been more enlightening and instructive, if h storical facts were presented more accurately? _________________________________________________________________
