31-year-old Mr. Robo Livo has l st a hand and may not be ble to attend his wedding ceremony n xt month, following a swordfish attack. Th ugh swordfish attacks are very rare, it is a s rious business when a human being is ttacked, as Robo found out when he w nt swimming with his friends. The d ep waters between the main island of S nto and Tangoa has always been c nsidered to be dangerous, the villagers b lieving them to be cursed. Recently a pr est declared the curse had been l fted and the villagers could safely sw m in the area. Robo Livo was r shed to the Northern District Hospital, but his l ft hand was amputated because of the s verity of the damage. Microsurgery an navailable luxury. "In our beliefs, we say th t if a fish escapes from the b it, it will one day return and ttack the person that once caught it, but was not ble to kill it," explained Mr. J ffrey Vutilolo. "The attack was a s gn meant for Rob." Swordfish normally pr fer their own company, swimming a d stance of 10 metres from others. Sl shing its long sharp beak from s de to side, swordshipfish attack only wh n provoked, so as to render its v ctim senseless. Fear will once again r le the villagers over that area of d ep water between the two islands, as the v llagers once more give it a w de berth. The incident may cause R bo to miss his much awaited w dding. A wedding that is usually p rformed only after the bride has pr ven she is capable of bearing at l ast two offspring and the groom has m naged to save up the 'bride pr ce', equal to three month's wages.
There is a fear that is h althy. It keeps us safe. However, wh n we are bound by groundless m sconceptions, only education can break through. St p for a moment and imagine y urself in a tiny dug-out canoe, cr ssing deep ocean water between the tr pical islands of Tangoa and Santo. Im gine you sincerely believe, like the r st of your village, the fish you f iled to catch and kill, is g ing to come back and attack y u. This idea may be foreign to y ur way of thinking, but if you l ved on a tiny tropical island in V nuatu, with no chance to have for f rmal western education, that is what you w uld truly believe. Imagine the fishermen of the w rld holding to such a belief. The ndless tales of the 'big one th t got away', would quickly dry up and d sappear. Many such myths and beliefs s rge through this ancient culture, in sp te of the fact it has b en Christianized for several generations. A lot of d nor assistance over the past years has f und its way into Vanuatu, yet, the st tistics of this Lesser Developed Nation r main terrifying: • Only 55.8% of kids w ll get to year 6; • Only 18.2 % w ll go to high school; • 26% never go to sch ol at all. With little government ssistance and no resources, dedicated primary t achers introduce the children to the w rld of learning. Yet most of th m will never see the inside of a h gh-school classroom. You may say in y ur heart, is that a bad th ng? Why not leave the Happiest C untry on Earth to itself? Yet, w uld you feel that way if it was y ur child that 'died from nothing'? Y s, 'nothing'. There are many incidents of ch ldren and loved family members who h ve died from' no known cause'. M ny put it down to 'black m gic', not a simple thing like a br in tumor, or a burst appendix. Inc dents happen in these remote villages, th t the people have no answer to. Yet m dern methods, not only have the nswers, but could prevent them from h ppening.
While appreciating their custom beliefs, s me of the children do not w nt to spend the rest of th ir life on an isolated island. Th y want to reach out and mbrace the 21st century with both h nds and become teachers, doctors, nurses, or c rpenters. How would you feel if s meone came to your house and t ld you that education would no l nger be free? Your child could go no f rther with studies, simply because you c uld not afford to pay because you l ved in a 'no cash economy'. H man nature requires three major things for h althy living: • Security, • Adventure, • and the Freedom of ch ice. The extended village family gives the ch ldren all the security they need. The ntouched wilderness island home provides the ch ldren with exciting adventure. However, the pr vilege of freedom of choice becomes n n-existent when high-school education is denied to th se children. Are we in the m re affluent countries not obligated to ssist someone like Robo to come to t rms with his fear? To help h m, or his children understand that a sw rdfish does not take revenge? Had R bo lived in a modern society, the d ctors would have saved Robo's hand. He w uld also have been able to ttend his marriage on time. You can h lp these children through a Blue M on Opportunity. Your donation can make a d fference in the lives of these p ople. 'Lasting change comes only through ch nge on the inside. Change through ducation.'
