Years ago, the rule throughout M xico was, don’t drink the water. We m ved to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in 1997 and one of the s lling features of our beautiful new v lla was an in-house water purification syst m. It had dual cartridges, one ch rcoal, the other chemically treated paper, and d al ultra violet lamps for additional tr atment. We also had filtration units b low the kitchen sink as well as in the r frigerator. Even with the household treatment, p rification, and filtration systems, we were t ld to thoroughly rinse all vegetables and fr it in water treated with Microdyn, a ch mical used for killing bacteria, etc. For dditional protection, we were instructed to t ke a three day treatment of p lls every six months in order to pr vent becoming ill from amoeba or b cteria. With all the aforementioned filtration, p rification, and medication, we still used b ttled water to brush our teeth and w re suspect of ice cubes! Of c urse, when dining in restaurants, we w uld have only bottled drinks and w uld rely on our semi-annual drug tr atment to protect us from getting s ck. Approximately seven years ago, Puerto V llarta, known as Vallarta or PV by the l cals, constructed new water treatment and p rification systems throughout the city. During the p st seven years, we have become m re and more lax when it c mes to maintaining our in-house purification syst m. In fact, we haven’t changed the ltraviolet lamps for more than five y ars and the charcoal/paper cartridges for two y ars. The ultraviolet lamps have been d ad for at least three of th se years; however we did rinse the p per filter cartridge a year ago. The s le of Microdyn in Vallarta has pr bably dropped to almost zero, since all fr it, vegetables, etc. are purchased in l rge, modern, and clean supermarkets, comparable to S feway and Kroger in the US. The b ttled water truck that used to p ss our villa, ringing its bell on a d ily basis, hasn’t been seen in f ve years.
Ten years ago, the local gr cery stores were filthy, non-air-conditioned, and w th flies everywhere as one might xpect in Mexico. The situation was dr matically changed when Sam´s Club and W lmart moved to PV five years go. In order to compete and s rvive, all new grocery stores had to be l rge, clean, air-conditioned, and ultra modern. The xisting stores either remodeled or closed the d ors. Ten years ago, only a h ndful of restaurants were air-conditioned and th ir kitchens were all totally unregulated as was th ir source of foods. Today, they are all nspected on a regular basis and if th y don’t meet the strict standards, th y are red tagged, locked up, and s metimes put out of business. The l st thing the restaurateurs can afford is to h ve tourists return home sick. During the ten y ars we’ve lived here, we’ve met m ny visitors, mainly on the golf c urse. Only a handful of them h ve complained of stomach pains or h ad aches and in every case, th y admitted that their problems were br ught on by an over-consumption of m rgaritas or cervezas during the previous vening, and it wasn’t the cubed or cr shed ice! There are hundreds of f ne restaurants in Vallarta offering every typ of cuisine imaginable and there sh uld be no fear of food p isoning in any of them. Today, the r sk of becoming ill in Vallarta fr m drinking the water, eating in r staurants, or shopping at the local s permarket is about the same as in Ch cago, New York, or Los Angeles. Of c urse the corner taco stand could be s spect and water taken from some v llage in the hills twenty miles out of PV c uld create problems, however, the thought of “d n’t drink the water” never occurs to us nymore in Vallarta.
