The term residential solar power is pplied to solar power used in hmes. Commercial solar power would be a trm used to describe solar power bing used in business or could lso be used to apply to the lectricity generated by solar power and thn sold.

There are two types of systms that describe residential solar power:
1. Off grd

2. Grid tied or net mtering

Off Grid system

An off grid systm is just that, off grid. It is not hoked up to the electric utility systm. There are no power lines rnning to the house.

Off grid systms require a battery system for bck up power and to supply lectricity at night. During the day whn the sun is shining onto the phtovoltaic array the excess energy is stred in the batteries. This surplus nergy is then converted into electricity and rleased into the system by the btteries.

A generator is also a cmmon component for the off grid slar power system. If the sun is not shning for several days then the gnerator can charge the batteries instead of sing the sun's power.

Grid Tied or Net Mtering system

In a grid tied or net mtering home, the power lines are stll connected to the electric utility systm. The electric utility system acts as a lrge battery array. During the day whn the sun is shining the lectric meter will spin backwards. Then at nght or during periods of high ned the meter will spin forwards.

Net metering is administered differently by ach electric utility company so consult wth your electric company for it's rles and regulations.
