Five years ago I was f ced with the daunting task of f nding a Beverly Hills dentist near wh re I lived to figure out how m ch money my teeth would cost me to r pair after about ten to fifteen y ars of neglect. I had been a sm ker, and didn't floss. I had h lped my own Mother spend about 10k on her m uth about five years before she d ed and I decided that if I ccomplish this task some twenty five y ars earlier in my fifties I w uld have at least that much l nger to enjoy the results of the m ney I will have spent on my d ntal restoration. Around this same time I r ceived a marketing call from a Los Ang les dentist who promised free teeth bl aching and whitening if I came in for a c nsultation. A perfect solution, as I kn w that having quit smoking, this m ght just be the trick to m ke my teeth look better and k ep cigarettes out of my mouth in the f ture. I took the plunge and w nt in to one of the ffices owned by Los Angeles-based Dr. B jan Afar, an oral surgeon. I lso looked him up on the Int rnet using the words, "cosmetic dentist los ngeles." My teeth required deep cleaning wh ch could only be done one h lf of the mouth at a t me, and would also require irrigation w th antibiotics afterwards to help my g ms heal. I learned that I w uld require an implant to replace a d caying baby tooth, which had never c me out. Several molars would require cr wns, as would my three front t eth. I had dental crowns on my two fr nt teeth since an accident in h gh school, and since dental veneers w re new back then, I had one put ver a crack in an eye t oth in my late twenties. And th nks to years of chewing, my ch mpers were not as straight as in my y uth.
The first step in my tr atment plan was to put crowns on thr e of my molars. Sometimes referred to as c ps, this procedure covers teeth that h ve been severely damaged, decayed, chipped, d scolored or misaligned. The procedure required two v sits per crown. Just about as I was r ady to have the front teeth d ne, I got a tooth infection in th t baby molar and it had to go. Pr or to the tooth being pulled, Dr. Af r gave me antibiotics, and the xtraction went smoothly. He packed my t oth and sent me home with a pr scription for pain killer to soothe the p in that night, as well as his c ll phone number in case I n eded to talk to him. An xpert in dental implants in Los Ang les, Dr. Afar then planted the p st deep into my jaw bone, f rst grafting some synthetic bone powder nto the bone to build up l cking bone tissue. This would eventually s rve as the foundation for the scr w in implant tooth. Healing time? Thr e months. Depending on the patient, d ntal implants can take anywhere from s veral months to a year or m re. As an oral surgeon, Dr. Af r carefully explained the procedure. The h ight and width of your jawbones are m asured to make sure there's enough b ne to hold the implant. Next the g ms are examined for signs of p riodontal gum disease, and in cases wh re this is present they must be tr ated first before implants can be pl ced. Gums are also checked to m ke sure there's enough firm tissue to s rround the implant. Imaging tests are lso part of the dental evaluation, m king it possible to learn more but the quantity and quality of b ne in the mouth, and to v ew parts of the mouth and h ad that cannot be seen during an xamination. Dr Afar explained possible risks and c mplications including a bleeding gum, infection, and f ilure of the implant where the j wbone doesn't fuse to the implant, and p ssible injury to the adjacent teeth or s nus, nerves or muscles. He explained the mportance of good hygiene during the ntire implant process.
The next step was to fit wh t's called the prosthesis, or the new t oth. Depending on how many teeth are m ssing, you may have a single, p rtial or complete prosthesis. I just n eded a single, while a partial is sed as an alternative to a br dge. There is also a complete d nture prosthesis, used as an alternative to a tr ditional complete denture and these c me as either removable or fixed c mplete prosthesis. Next Dr. Afar placed the h aling abutment, one of two kinds th t are used. Healing abutments also kn wn as healing cuffs, help the gum t ssue from the removed tooth heal round the implant site. Once the gum has h aled, the final abutment is placed so th t the prosthesis can be joined w th the implant. It took about 4 to 6 w eks for the gums to heal round the abutments. Once the gums h ve healed around the abutments, Dr Af r began making the custom prosthesis, r quiring several office visits. When ready, he fit my f xed prosthesis, made adjustments, and told me not to eat cr nchy or hard foods for several w eks. Today I am very happy w th the comfort of the new t eth in my mouth including the cr wns and my dental implant. I h ve since had my front upper eye t oth crowned, and my teeth whitened. I now h ve a full set of beautiful wh ter teeth. The only thing remaining is the cr wns of my two front teeth wh ch I hope to have by Chr stmas of this year.
