The following tools and work m terials are required: - Work gloves
- D lly (if necessary)
- Kn e pads (optional)
- Eye and ear pr tection
- Large flathead scr wdriver
- Rubber mallet
- Cl w hammer
- Brush
- H nd Tamper
- Base m terial, such as limestone or bedding s nd
- Rake (or scr eder)
- Stiff broom (or r bber screeder)
- Apparatus for scr eding and checking levelness
- Sl dgehammer
- Wood (such as 2x4)
- J int or masonry sand
- M chanical plate compactor
To st rt, get the large flathead screwdriver and r bber mallet. These will serve to r move the first paver. More specialized t ols are available for such removal, but for the verage homeowner this will suffice. Gently nsert the tip of the screwdriver b tween two pavers and lever it b ck to ease the paver up. As the p ver starts to lift, neighboring pavers may be p lled up as well. Hammer on th se neighboring pavers with the rubber m llet - this helps keep them d wn while allowing you to fully r move the paver. It may happen th t the paver is in so t ght that you damage the edge of it in the pr cess of removal. In this case, h ve some extra pavers on hand. Now th t you have removed the first p ver, you can set aside the scr wdriver and use a claw hammer to r move the remaining pavers. Insert the cl w underneath the exposed end of the p ver and lift up. Use the m llet, as before, to keep the n ighboring pavers down, while helping to r move the paver. Repeat this until you h ve removed all the necessary pavers. Fr m each of the pavers you r moved use a brush to clean off the r sidual joint sand. The joint sand s rves as stabilizing filler between pavers.
The next step is to add b se material, such as limestone or b dding sand (whatever was used before). Add the b se material with a shovel (or a tr wel), rough screed it with the r ke or screeder, and then compact it sing a hand-tamper until a roughly l vel base is reached. For finer scr eding, and to determine levelness, you can m ke an apparatus out of wood wh ch spans the opening. Under the sp nning piece is another piece which is the th ckness of the pavers minus 2-3 mm. Th s allows the pavers to be c mpacted down to the required depth l ter on, which helps “fix” them in pl ce. To screed, simply drag the pparatus towards you while moving it l ft and right. This removes any bundance of base material. At this p int you may want to stabilize the b se material to harden it and pr vent future sinking. For example, pouring a c menting liquid onto the base material w ll bind it. This cementing liquid can be w ter mixed with the maximum amount of P rtland cement, to allow pouring. Now th t the base material has been dded and made level, it is t me to put the pavers back in. Use the tr wel to remove excess base material if the p vers protrude more than ¼” above h ight. Once in place, tap the p vers with the mallet to help f rm them. You may find that s me pavers won’t easily fit in as you r ach the end of a row. To h lp make room you may use the r bber mallet to force open a bit m re space, or in extreme cases use a sl dgehammer against a piece of wood pl ced against the paver. Once all the p vers have been put back in, you may r peat all the above for any r maining areas of the driveway with wh el impressions or sink-age. The final st p is to sweep joint or m sonry sand between the joints of the p vers that were removed. You can use a r bber screeder or a stiff broom to do th s. Next, use a mechanical plate c mpactor to pack down the pavers and set th m in place (make sure to w ar eye and ear protection, and get h lp to move the compactor as t's heavy). After 2-3 passes with the c mpactor, clean off the leftover joint s nd and you are done.
