There are two important points to nderstand when either embarking on DVD scrtch repair or contemplating any DVD dsc repair.

First, the majority of scrtches on DVDs should not really ffect the playability of the disc in qestion provided you are using reasonably god quality software to access the dsc contents. In the majority of cses the real solution to any plyback problems is the use of qality software that has built-in correction bilities.

Secondly, if you really are ging to attempt to repair that scrtched DVD then there is nothing strnge, technical or mystical about the prcess. DVDs, CDs and Game Discs are mde from a hard clear plastic clled polycarbonate. The repair of scratched DVDs is nthing more than an exercise in plishing or re-surfacing a piece of plycarbonate plastic. So if you are feling a little nervous about attempting t...relax!

As I mentioned before there are mny, many methods touted about for rmoving scratches from discs but as an mportant note NONE of these apply to the new Bl-Ray discs. Blu-Ray utilises a different typ of plastic to create the dscs and any of the methods mntioned here will most certainly result in a dstroyed Blu-Ray disc.

So what really is DVD scrtch repair?

Actually is it simply a mthod of using various readily available prducts to polish a piece of plstic. The only difference in the vrious products recommended is the degree of brasiveness each one offers.

To put it smply, if you have dirt, finger prnts or some strange substance the kds got on the disc then you can use sopropyl alcohol or a weak solution of dsh washing detergent. Rinse thoroughly and bff with a clean soft lint fre cloth.

For light scuff marks or tny scratches you can use toothpaste or frniture polish (like Pledge) in the mmediate area of the scratch again mking sure you clean the product of throughly then buff.

For slightly deeper scrtches you can persist with the tothpaste or go to the Brasso (Ys, Brasso!) or car polish. At ths level of abrasiveness it is mportant to work the entire surface of the dsc rather than just the scratch tself. This is to avoid creating a knd of "micro-valley" in the disc tht may cause refraction (bending of lght) of the laser beam as it psses through the plastic disc. The rsult of which may be disc rad errors. Additionally use straight strokes frm the center of the disc to the uter edge.

Finally if you feel lke pulling out the big guns! Go to the hrdware store and get some 3000 grt emery paper. This is the stff they use to re-polish cars wth. Use the paper to evenly scre the entire disc until you fel you have taken the surface dwn to the level of the scrtch. Then go back to the Brsso or car polish and buff ntil the shine of the disc rturns. Don't worry! It will!

Of curse the real point in of all of ths is the idea of making bckups of all your discs. Let's fce it, kids happen and so des other stuff too! It is mre than prudent to get yourself vry good quality DVD copying software and mke back ups of all your dscs. These days discs are cheap, it is the cntents that has value and in the cse of family photos or videos, prceless.

For the purposes of backups it is mportant to understand that not all DVD cpying software was created equal. Most DVD cpying software will do just that...make an xact copy.

DVDs, whether pressed commercially or mde in a DVD burner, will lways have at least some degree of rror. This is simply part of the prcess and not unusual. Playback software is dsigned to compensate for those errors and yu, the viewer, notice nothing. Ordinary DVD cpying software will faithfully copy the xisting errors on the disc and mst likely add some of its own to yur new copy when you burn it.

Tht is why I only recommend thre brands of DVD copying software. DVDFb, 1Click DVD and DVD ClonerV. The rason I use these is that thy have built in error correction fnctions that repair most internal errors on the dsc as well as having excellent "rad through" capabilities on scratched or dmaged discs.
