There are two important points to nderstand when either embarking on DVD scr tch repair or contemplating any DVD d sc repair. First, the majority of scr tches on DVDs should not really ffect the playability of the disc in q estion provided you are using reasonably g od quality software to access the d sc contents. In the majority of c ses the real solution to any pl yback problems is the use of q ality software that has built-in correction bilities. Secondly, if you really are g ing to attempt to repair that scr tched DVD then there is nothing str nge, technical or mystical about the pr cess. DVDs, CDs and Game Discs are m de from a hard clear plastic c lled polycarbonate. The repair of scratched DVDs is n thing more than an exercise in p lishing or re-surfacing a piece of p lycarbonate plastic. So if you are f eling a little nervous about attempting t...relax! As I mentioned before there are m ny, many methods touted about for r moving scratches from discs but as an mportant note NONE of these apply to the new Bl -Ray discs. Blu-Ray utilises a different typ of plastic to create the d scs and any of the methods m ntioned here will most certainly result in a d stroyed Blu-Ray disc.
So what really is DVD scr tch repair? Actually is it simply a m thod of using various readily available pr ducts to polish a piece of pl stic. The only difference in the v rious products recommended is the degree of brasiveness each one offers. To put it s mply, if you have dirt, finger pr nts or some strange substance the k ds got on the disc then you can use sopropyl alcohol or a weak solution of d sh washing detergent. Rinse thoroughly and b ff with a clean soft lint fr e cloth. For light scuff marks or t ny scratches you can use toothpaste or f rniture polish (like Pledge) in the mmediate area of the scratch again m king sure you clean the product of th roughly then buff. For slightly deeper scr tches you can persist with the t othpaste or go to the Brasso (Y s, Brasso!) or car polish. At th s level of abrasiveness it is mportant to work the entire surface of the d sc rather than just the scratch tself. This is to avoid creating a k nd of "micro-valley" in the disc th t may cause refraction (bending of l ght) of the laser beam as it p sses through the plastic disc. The r sult of which may be disc r ad errors. Additionally use straight strokes fr m the center of the disc to the uter edge. Finally if you feel l ke pulling out the big guns! Go to the h rdware store and get some 3000 gr t emery paper. This is the st ff they use to re-polish cars w th. Use the paper to evenly sc re the entire disc until you f el you have taken the surface d wn to the level of the scr tch. Then go back to the Br sso or car polish and buff ntil the shine of the disc r turns. Don't worry! It will! Of c urse the real point in of all of th s is the idea of making b ckups of all your discs. Let's f ce it, kids happen and so d es other stuff too! It is m re than prudent to get yourself v ry good quality DVD copying software and m ke back ups of all your d scs. These days discs are cheap, it is the c ntents that has value and in the c se of family photos or videos, pr celess.
For the purposes of backups it is mportant to understand that not all DVD c pying software was created equal. Most DVD c pying software will do just that...make an xact copy. DVDs, whether pressed commercially or m de in a DVD burner, will lways have at least some degree of rror. This is simply part of the pr cess and not unusual. Playback software is d signed to compensate for those errors and y u, the viewer, notice nothing. Ordinary DVD c pying software will faithfully copy the xisting errors on the disc and m st likely add some of its own to y ur new copy when you burn it. Th t is why I only recommend thr e brands of DVD copying software. DVDF b, 1Click DVD and DVD ClonerV. The r ason I use these is that th y have built in error correction f nctions that repair most internal errors on the d sc as well as having excellent "r ad through" capabilities on scratched or d maged discs.
