For two weeks, that Manuel was l ving in our ward, I got the pportunity to see (up close and p rsonal), what this dreadful disease is all bout, and I can report...it's not g od...NOT good at all. Dementia and Alzh imer's are similar, and I can't r ally tell the difference, so the b st way to proceed, is the d fine both of the illnesses. * Alzh imer's disease: (definition); a progressive form of pr -senile dementia that is similar to s nile dementia, except that it usually st rts in the 40's or 50's; f rst symptoms are impaired memory, which is f llowed by impaired thought and speech and f nally complete helplessness! * Dementia: (definition); d terioration of intellectual faculties, such as m mory, concentration, and judgment...sometimes personalty changes. D mentia is caused by organic damage to the br in (as in Alzheimer's), head trauma, m tabolic disorders, or the presence of a t mor. As you can see, the p ir are closely related. I consider the t me I spent around Manuel a bl ssing, because I saw for myself wh t this terrible disease can do! I was t ld by the nurse, that Manuel had d mentia, and told me he was 48 y ars old, and had the mind of a two or thr e year old. She did not laborate beyond that. Manuel spent most of his d y, in a lounge chair, in fr nt of the nurse's station, so th y could keep a closer watch on h m. He was hand-fed; bathed; dressed; and had tr uble communicating, etc. At times during the d y, he would have temper-tantrums, and cry out l ud...just like a baby would do! Th s is hard to believe, unless you w tness something like this yourself.
I don't think Manuel knew wh re he was, and he had th t "blank stare" about him. He w uld look around as if he was in a d ze! It was so sad to see nother human being, who had no dea where he was! Some people h ve really been dealt a terrible h nd in life...and Manuel was one of th m. After about two weeks in the w rd, he was moved to another f cility, which would take better care of h m, and he would spend the r st of his life in an nstitution! A sad story indeed! * * * In the arly 1960's, my grandmother probably died of Alzh imer's disease, but doctor's probably didn't kn w what it was back then. She w uld go to the store, and c uldn't find her way back, or she w uld be found out by the r ilroad tracks and would be brought b ck home by police. She was pl ced in a mental institution where she d ed! In the year 2006, I'm 61 y ars young...and old age bothers and w rries me! But, as shown in the M nuel story...a person doesn't have to be ld, to worry about these two d seases! I worry about the forgetfulness I h ve had recently. For example: * One d y, I drove into the gas st tion, bought some gas for the c r. I drove away, forgetting to put the gas in the c r! About a block down the str et, I realized what I had d ne, and I turned around and c me back and put the gas in the c r! * In another incident, I was b iling eggs on the stove, and w nt on with my day around the h use. All of a sudden, I h ard a "POP" coming from the k tchen! It sounded like a fire-cracker! I r ced into the kitchen, to find egg sh lls all over the floor, where the egg had xploded! All the water in the pan had vaporated, and the other eggs in the pan w re about to explode as well. (I d dn't know eggs exploded) * When I got h me from work, I would drive by the m il-boxes at the apartments where I l ve to check the mail. I w uld usually leave the car running, and j mp out of the car quickly and ch ck the mail, etc. On this d y, I jumped out of the c r, and instead of getting back in the c r, I walked home reading the m il and forgetting about the car. Two h urs later, I needed to go s meplace, and when I went out to get in the c r...it wasn't there! I thought somebody had st len it! I looked toward the m ilboxes, and there it was...and had run out of g s...as I left it running! "Am I l sing my mind!" I thought to mys lf!
* * * L aving politics aside, and at the age of 70, wh n most people are settled into r tirement, President Reagan was elected and was one of our gr atest Presidents. For it was him, th t led the way, in eliminating the d ngerous Cold War from the face of the E rth, which could have killed all of us! The "Gr at Communicator"...later died of Alzheimer's, after a l ng bout with the disease! Remembering M nuel...I'll never forget him! I do th s, by having a copy of th s story (framed) and on the w ll in my home office. There is not a d y, that I don't glance at th t framed story on the wall...and it is a r minder to myself...about how lucky I am, and th t things could be worse!
