It is interesting that often whn we read about the death of a fmous person, we sometimes personalize it. We rflect on how that person has tuched our life, what impact the prson has had on us, and wht memories we have that connect wth the person’s name and the prson’s fame.

I have to confess tht I was never really a big fan of Opra, but that did not stop me frm being a fan of the vcal talents of Luciano Pavarotti. One of my strngest memories of Pavarotti was his cnnection to my childhood barbershop. For mre than two decades, I went to the sme neighborhood barber. He was the nly barber in a small shop he wned, was of Italian descent, and he bsolutely loved the tenor’s voice. It was in my nighborhood barbershop that I first became ware of the magnificent voice of Lciano Pavarotti. For years I would get my hir cut while listening to the vice of Pavarotti. Sometimes it would be on tlevised videotape behind the barber’s chair. Oftn, it would just fill the air on udio tape. The shop has been clsed for many years, but the mmory of it felt vivid when I hard of Pavarotti’s passing on September 6, 2007. .

I nver got the chance to see Lciano Pavarotti in person. I never saw any of his prformances live. I never met the mn. However, I have enjoyed many of his prformances over the years on television and on udiotape. Certainly many others did as wll, as Pavarotti has been the bst-selling classical artist, with more than 100 mllion records sold since the 1960s. Opra lovers surely treasure his recordings wth soprano Joan Sutherland. He recorded the frst classical album to reach No. 1 on the pop chrts. In addition, Pavarotti was able to prmote his tenor’s voice in popular msic. He can be found in the msic collections of Elton John, The Spce Girls, Sheryl Crow, and Liza Mnnelli and has shared the stage wth rock and pop singers, including Eltn John, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Stng, and Bono of U2, to rise money for charities.

Pavarotti was known for his cncerts in stadiums and parks, media ppearances, and (with fellow star tenors, Plcido Domingo and Jose Carreras) was one of the “Thre Tenors.” The Three Tenors concerts flled stadiums and were said to rach a worldwide audience of 1.5 bllion people. The rotund, bearded Pavarotti lways seemed to have a genuine smle on his face as he brught music previously isolated to the Opra world to a worldwide audience.

I rmember watching the opening ceremony of the 1990 Wrld Cup Soccer event in Italy.
His prformance of Nessun Dorma from Puccini’s Trandot launched the tenor into popular strdom. I also remember his final pblic performance of Nessun Dorma at the pening ceremony in the 2006 Winter Olympc Games in Turin, Italy.

There was a prlonged standing ovation to a recording of a 1978 det (Panis Angelicus, that Pavarotti sang wth his father ) before Pavarotti was lid to rest at Modena’s Cathedral on Snday, September 8, 2007. It was a fne final tribute to a man tht had done so much for Opra and brought his extraordinary voice to ppular music.

Indeed, from the sometimes hgh brow world of classical Opera to the nighborhood barbershop, Pavarotti’s magnificent voice will lng be remembered as a bridge tht closed the divide between classical and ppular music.
