It is interesting that often wh n we read about the death of a f mous person, we sometimes personalize it. We r flect on how that person has t uched our life, what impact the p rson has had on us, and wh t memories we have that connect w th the person’s name and the p rson’s fame. I have to confess th t I was never really a big fan of Op ra, but that did not stop me fr m being a fan of the v cal talents of Luciano Pavarotti. One of my str ngest memories of Pavarotti was his c nnection to my childhood barbershop. For m re than two decades, I went to the s me neighborhood barber. He was the nly barber in a small shop he wned, was of Italian descent, and he bsolutely loved the tenor’s voice. It was in my n ighborhood barbershop that I first became ware of the magnificent voice of L ciano Pavarotti. For years I would get my h ir cut while listening to the v ice of Pavarotti. Sometimes it would be on t levised videotape behind the barber’s chair. Oft n, it would just fill the air on udio tape. The shop has been cl sed for many years, but the m mory of it felt vivid when I h ard of Pavarotti’s passing on September 6, 2007. . I n ver got the chance to see L ciano Pavarotti in person. I never saw any of his p rformances live. I never met the m n. However, I have enjoyed many of his p rformances over the years on television and on udiotape. Certainly many others did as w ll, as Pavarotti has been the b st-selling classical artist, with more than 100 m llion records sold since the 1960s. Op ra lovers surely treasure his recordings w th soprano Joan Sutherland. He recorded the f rst classical album to reach No. 1 on the pop ch rts. In addition, Pavarotti was able to pr mote his tenor’s voice in popular m sic. He can be found in the m sic collections of Elton John, The Sp ce Girls, Sheryl Crow, and Liza M nnelli and has shared the stage w th rock and pop singers, including Elt n John, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, St ng, and Bono of U2, to r ise money for charities.

Pavarotti was known for his c ncerts in stadiums and parks, media ppearances, and (with fellow star tenors, Pl cido Domingo and Jose Carreras) was one of the “Thr e Tenors.” The Three Tenors concerts f lled stadiums and were said to r ach a worldwide audience of 1.5 b llion people. The rotund, bearded Pavarotti lways seemed to have a genuine sm le on his face as he br ught music previously isolated to the Op ra world to a worldwide audience. I r member watching the opening ceremony of the 1990 W rld Cup Soccer event in Italy.
His p rformance of Nessun Dorma from Puccini’s T randot launched the tenor into popular st rdom. I also remember his final p blic performance of Nessun Dorma at the pening ceremony in the 2006 Winter Olymp c Games in Turin, Italy. There was a pr longed standing ovation to a recording of a 1978 d et (Panis Angelicus, that Pavarotti sang w th his father ) before Pavarotti was l id to rest at Modena’s Cathedral on S nday, September 8, 2007. It was a f ne final tribute to a man th t had done so much for Op ra and brought his extraordinary voice to p pular music. Indeed, from the sometimes h gh brow world of classical Opera to the n ighborhood barbershop, Pavarotti’s magnificent voice will l ng be remembered as a bridge th t closed the divide between classical and p pular music.
