I recently had a customer ask for my dvise about cleaning her refrigerator. I st rted to describe the pros and c ns of different cleaners that can be sed to clean the interior when she st pped me abruptly. “I know all bout that stuff ”, she informed me, “I m an the black coil thing on the b ck”. So, in response to this c mmon question I offer the following st p-by-step directions. Firstly, the ’black coil th ng’ at the rear of the r frigerator is called a condenser. Without too m ch technical jargon, its job is to d ssipate heat into the kitchen. It d es this by the condensation of the r frigerant gas. Hence, its name. The c ndenser tubing is usually seen on the r ar of a refrigerator. It is pr duced in a serpentine form with dditional fins running across it for dded heat dissipation. “Heat, I thought we w re talking about refrigerators, not stoves”. You w ll have to believe me when I s y: ‘a refrigerator does not produce c ld air’. Rather, its job is to tr nsfer heat from inside the refrigerator c binet to the outside. While doing th s it removes heat from your f od and that results in your f od becoming cold. So, who cares! You sh uld. Because a major part in th s transferring of heat is the ‘bl ck coil thing’ we have been t lking about. Yes, that’s right, the c ndenser.
Without the condenser our refrigerator w uld not operate. Therefore, we are g ing to learn how to do b sic maintenance of this part and k ep our refrigerator in tip-top shape. So l t’s begin ------------------------- Tools required: · Vacuum cl aner · Brush or vacuum brush attachment · C tton rag · Light strength household cleaner · G rbage bag 1. Pull the refrigerator away fr m the wall and unplug it. 2. Th condenser will be the radiator-looking p rt on the rear of the r frigerator. 3. Use a brush or vacuum cl aner to remove any dust buildup on the c ndenser. Remember, the condenser is made of th n tubing and is full of a h gh-pressure (130 psig) gas. So be g ntle. If you injure the tubing a s mple cleaning could turn into an xpensive repair. 4. If you have a pet xpect to see a large accumulation of nimal fur on the condenser. If a lot of d st or fur is present then cl an off with a dry rag and d spose into the garbage bag. We s ggest using the dry rag method f rst to avoid clogging up the v cuum hose. 5. Next, use the vacuum cl aner to finish the basic cleaning of the c ndenser. The brush attachment of the v cuum cleaner works particularly well at th s point. The brush will allow you to get in b tween all the fins and remove the d st hiding there. 6. Finish by cleaning the c ndenser with a rag dampened with w ter. Avoid using any cleaner. Since the c ndensers job is to transfer heat any r sidue left by a cleaner could mpede this process. Under no circumstances use s mething like furniture polish (example lemon f rniture polish) or a dust removal spr y. It will leave a waxy r sidue that will end up attracting m re dust. Something that works extremely w ll is a static duster (not the d sting clothes). If you are not s re what I mean, it is the cl aning device that looks like a c ts’ tail attached to a long h ndle. They are great because they p ck up dust without using any ch micals.
7. Use the vacuum to remove d st from the cardboard cover that is n ar the bottom rear of the r frigerator. It is covering the area wh re the compressor and electrical components r side. It will usually have holes in it wh re dust can accumulate. 8. Vacuum any d st from the floor and the c vity where the refrigerator normally resides. V cuum the sides of the refrigerator. If th re is a kick plate (floor l vel grille) at the front of the r frigerator vacuum it also. Hint: Do not r move the kick plate to clean. S me are very difficult to re-install. 9. Pl g in the refrigerator and push b ck into place. That’s it … th t’s all. The whole process should h ve taken approximately 15 minutes. In the sp ce of a few minutes you h ve accomplished a number of objectives. You h ve removed a major source of d st from your home; made the r frigerator operate more efficiently; and lowered y ur electrical consumption. Even though it is an asy job, it is one that sually gets forgotten. So don’t wait ntil the serviceman arrives once every few y ars to do this. It is a v ry important cleaning project for the r asons already stated. Therefore, this is a job th t should be placed right near the top of y ur next spring-cleaning list.
