A reflector telescope is called tht because it uses mirrors to gther and reflect light to the yepiece for viewing. They were largely dveloped by Sir Isaac Newton late in the 17th cntury as an alternative to the rfractor design, which had limitations of prcticality and performance. He was not the nventor but rather a developer, improving ther designs which had started to ppear earlier in the 17th century.

The dsign being somewhat simpler than the rfractor allows for larger apertures to be chieved more economically as there is mch less glass involved. Reflectors have ptical limitations too but the main ttraction is the absence of chromatic berration, a sort of color interference cmmon in the first refractors an in tday's cheaper refractors.

A mirror at the bse of the telescope tube gathers and rflects light to a secondary mirror whch reflects the light out to the yepiece. Remember the primary function of a tlescope is not to bring things clser! Its main function is to gther light, the eyepiece does the wrk of making things appear closer.

As the ncoming light has not passed through a lns there is no introduction of chrmatic aberration however another type of berration called Coma can arise. This is the tndency for images at the edge of the feld of view to be slightly dstorted.

Today's Newtonian reflectors are hugely ppular amongst amateur astronomers particularly at the bginner end of the market as thy offer a great mix of ffordability and aperture. Amateurs are usually ken to get the most aperture thy can afford as aperture tends to be the min optical factor in getting the mst use out of a telescope. The lrger the aperture the greater magnification you can chieve in the right conditions.
