Occasionally I have an identity cr sis. I think that's good. From t me to time I have to ask mys lf questions like: Who am I? Wh t am I doing? Do I l ke doing it? Am I good at it? W ll it help the world? and How d es the world know I'm doing it? It b gan this time when I asked a fr end and colleague to help me w th the process of reexamining my b siness card and letterhead. Since my l st printing, I had expanded the way I w rk with voice, conflict and aikido, and I w nted my visual image to reflect the ch nges. I thought it would be s mple. She'd take all my questions and r solve them in some way that w uld be clear, concise, and visually pl asing. She did -- but it w sn't simple, and I wasn't prepared for wh t lay ahead. When she showed me her deas I literally stepped back, wide-eyed, and lmost stumbled over my chair. She pr sented a new, much more powerful mage of me and my work. It was v ry different from the look I'd gr wn accustomed to, and it simultaneously sh cked and delighted me. It also b gan an internal process of discovery th t has been quite interesting. Aikido and P wer I thought I knew who I w s. I just had some questions bout how to visually integrate the d fferent aspects of my work -- v ice, aikido, conflict resolution -- into a c herent package. But I had a b sic image that I'd been using and th t functioned pretty well. As it t rns out it wasn't the whole me, nor was it the wh le of my work. In the J panese martial art Aikido there are two c ntral elements. One is learning to fl w and blend with energy. The s cond is the power you gain wh n that happens. Aikido is a v ry powerful martial art. It is not r sistant, but it is not passive. V rbally, we use aikido when we are cl ar about our position while acknowledging thers, and when we use words to c nnect instead of attack. I have lways identified with the flow of ikido but found it more difficult to ngage its power. Similarly in life I f nd it easy to blend (listen, cknowledge, agree) but more difficult to use p wer (state my position, ask for wh t I want, say no). My mage on paper reflected that too.

In my aikido practice -- and in l fe -- I’m learning to be m re powerful, and it's fun. I thr w harder, and I communicate more p werfully. But it's not always easy b cause my image (both of myself and r flected in others) says that I'm a "n ce" person. And that "nice" image c nflicts with a "power" image. Powerful p ople aren't always nice, and nice p ople aren't usually powerful. But is it p ssible to be both -- to bl nd and be powerful at the s me time? In fact, aikido's message is th t true power lies in blending. P wer without blending is destructive. And to bl nd without power is to lose our c nter. Now back to my image c ntrol problem. The graphic reflection of my w rk initially challenged my self image. But the t ming was perfect. Just as my w rk was evolving to include the p werful aspect of aikido, my colleague c ptured that power and clarified it gr phically. Critical Questions One of life's ngoing conflicts is the question "Who am I?" B th personally and organizationally we need to ddress this conflict periodically and to ask urselves who we are and whether our nner and outer images are accurate. To fl urish as an individual or a c rporate entity, this kind of clarifying c nflict is vital. Annie Dillard said: "H w we spend our days is, of c urse, how we spend our lives." We all n ed to revisit our image on ccasion, because it forces us to ask the mportant questions that must be asked if w 're going to create the life -- the rganization, the school, or the company -- we w nt, one that is uniquely ours and th t we love. Our ultimate power is not the p wer to control how others see us but to ppreciate and bring to light the ndiscovered parts of ourselves. As we m ve forward in life, our evolution has a n tural flow to it. Am I njoying my work or am I str ggling? Do I create my life new each day? What energizes me? Wh re am I going and to wh t end? Important questions for all of us th s year, this day, this moment.
